This webinar is organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council.

Our building stocks (over 50,000 building blocks) are ageing. By 2046, there will be 326,000 private housing units aged 70 or above, nearly 300 times of the building stock of the same age in 2015. Whilst green building professionals focus their attention on retro-commissioning and carrying out retrofits in energy-inefficient buildings, the building maintenance of these existing buildings is often neglected resulting in structural fabric decay, drainage suffocation, water seepages, indoor air contamination, health hazard and energy wastage. The webinar will visit some of the common building defects and maintenance challenges which are concerns to building users. Some of these problems may be minimised by green building design, early detection of defects and proper remedial operations. Various survey and diagnostic methodologies are discussed with a view to preventing premature building decay and promoting timely building maintenance.

Speaker:  Sr Prof. WONG Bay, Director, Hong Kong Green Building Council 

Sr Prof. WONG Bay is a Building Surveyor by profession. He is a Fellow of the HKIS, RPS(BS), RI(S) and Past President of HKIS in 2010 and 2011.  He served in the Hong Kong Government for over 37 years.  During his tenure as a civil servant, he spent most of his time in the Architectural Services Department and Housing Department.  He escalated from Maintenance Surveyor to Assistant Director of Housing before his retirement in 2010, contributing to public housing development, estate maintenance and management, housing subsidies policies and Home Ownership Schemes  as well as property marketing and sales.  Sr Prof. Wong was presented the “Distinguished Building Surveyors 1998 Award” by HKIS.  Currently, he has taken up a role in education as Adjunct Professor at the Department of Real Estate and Construction of The University of Hong Kong, aiming to nurture the young generation.
