The emergence of advanced and nanotechnologies offers new opportunities for practitioners in the design, construction, operation and maintenance of buildings. Organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC) and Nano and Advanced Materials Institute Ltd (NAMI) as the collaborating organisation, this conference features emerging and readily available technology enabled materials and products which enhance energy efficiency, resource efficiency, functionality, durability and indoor environmental quality for building sustainability.

Rapid Repair Mortar Materials (R2M2) for Corroded Concrete Slabs


Ir Dr Gary Chou, General Manager (Technical), Chun Wo Construction Holdings Company Limited

 

R2M2 is a rapid repairing mortar material, comprising a prescribed portion of steel fibres for repairing spalled concrete and recovering the lost tensile capacity in corroded rebars. This technology resists tensile loads for slabs and eliminates the need for rebar lapping, surpassing the conventional repair method in terms of cost and time.

Palmeco’s Geo-Insulator is made of fly ash (an abundant by-product of power plants), blended with palm fibre to produce an ultra-lightweight green thermal insulated board. A novel foam forming technology in cementitious concrete which yields 3 times better thermal insulation than that of normal concrete and lowers electricity consumption. Future Trends in Nanotechnology and Advanced Products and Applications – “Necessity is the mother of invention and innovation, and engineering professionals in the construction industry undoubtedly play a key role in shaping the outlook of the modern society.  Nevertheless, conventional approaches are found ineffective to address the increasing challenges of design, time and construction cost, and thus new ideas and innovations are inevitably required.  In this regard, advanced materials and technologies are promising boosters for the development of the construction industry.  Ivan will share NAMI’s new initiatives on Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) and pavement engineering, as well as applications from nanotechnology and advanced materials.

About the speakers



Dr Ivan Sham, Director of Research & Development (Construction) 

Dr Ivan Sham oversees the market segment of Construction at NAMI. He leads a team of scientists and professional engineers focusing on advanced cementitious materials, polymeric materials and structural analysis. Dr Sham is responsible for strategic technology developments of the sector and collaborations with the government, industries and academia.



Mrs Sylvia Lam, JP, Director of Architectural Services, HKSARG

Born and educated in Hong Kong, Sylvia graduated from the Faculty of Architecture in the University of Hong Kong before joining the Architectural Services Department in 1996.  She spearheads the Department’s business covering the development, construction and maintenance of government buildings and facilities.  The Department has about 2,000 staff with an annual project expenditure of about $16 billion.  The maintenance portfolio consists of 8,000 government premises amounting to 32,000,000 m2 floor area.


In the past 30 years of her services in the Department, Sylvia has been involved in a wide spectrum of projects. The most memorable ones are the Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum, Tamar Development Project and the Hong Kong Children’s Hospital.


Sylvia has special interest in the application of innovation and technology (I&T) such as big data, IoT, BIM to rejuvenate various construction and design processes for continuous improvement.  The Department started a ‘Corporate Intelligence’ initiative to comprehensively review how I&T applications can further improve the working efficiency, thus enhancing better services to the public.


Sylvia is also a Member of The Hong Kong Institute of Architects and is actively involving in the Institute as Member of the Board of External Affairs.


 

Ir Dr Gary Chou, General Manager (Technical), Chun Wo Construction Holdings Company Limited

Gary, a Chartered Engineer with 30+ years of experience, heads up the Technical Department in Chun Wo, leading the implementation of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Innovation for the entire construction group.  Gary is also the Technical Secretary of the in-house Innovation Committee, focusing on collaborative research with the academia in Hong Kong and overseas.


 

Wilfred Lau, Managing Director, Palmeco

Wilfred, an architect by training, is Founder and Managing Director of Palmeco. Investing substantially in R&D and manufacturing of building solutions, Palmeco develops products that meet stringent green building requirements, use recycled waste and have minimum impact on the environment.


 

Dr Xiyao Zhang, Engineer, NAMI

Dr Zhang serves as Engineer of NAMI. He is skilled in Thermal Energy Storage (TEM) systems and Phase Change Materials (PCM) utilisations.  He obtained his PhD in Building Service Engineering.  He has published over 10 papers and holds invention patents.  He also serves as reviewer for many academic journals.


 

LG Chan, Senior Manager, Business Development, Program Contractors Ltd

Mr LG Chan manages the business development of vitreous enamel panel in Asian Region where there is a high emerging demand of infrastructure building materials.  He supervises the team on sustainable development on vitreous enamel panel manufacturing business, process improvement and researches.


 

Dr Terry Meng, Technical Manager, NAMI

Dr Terry Meng is the group leader of NAMI’s Functional Plastics Group in the Healthcare sector.  He has over 10 years of R&D experience in polymer engineering, nanotechnology and biotechnology. His team has invented the revolutionary germ-repellent technology that minimizes bacterial contamination by preventing the initial adhesion.  Products developed with this technology have been awarded Gold Medals in the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva in three consecutive years from 2017 to 2019.


 

Norman Chang, Director, Growtech

Norman has over 20 years of experience in building materials and waterproofing.  In his current role as Director of Growtech, he specialises in waterproofing, concrete repairs, anti-rust treatments, green roof and vertical greening.


 

Benson Yau, Director and General Manager, Master Proofer Company Ltd

Benson transformed Master Proofer from a traditional construction contractor to a materials manufacturer. It invests in innovation and technologies and has since then carried out two successful research and development projects with government support.



Dr Bin Xiao, Senior Engineer, NAMI

Dr Xiao received her doctorate with research focused on aromatic polyester synthesis and PC monomer and polymer synthesis.  In NAMI, she manages and coordinates advanced porous materials and fire resistant materials related projects by using supercritical fluid technology.


 

Eddie Fung, Executive Director, Eco Link Building Materials Ltd

Mr Eddie Fung was trained up in Mechanical Engineering in power station and has over 30 years’ experience in building services and facilities management. He is one of the founding members of BSOMES. In recent years, he leads a R&D project of multi-functional air filter by application of nano-technology that aims to improve Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) and reduce energy consumption.
 

Eric Wong, Engineer, Wo Lee Steel Co Ltd

Eric is the Engineer in charge of the project.  He completed his undergraduate and postgraduate study from the HKUST and HKPU respectively.  He has over 15 years of experience on both engineering and production of products and involved in many new product development projects in Wo Lee.


 

Thomas Tin, CEO, Greentins Technology Ltd

Thomas Tin is the Founder of Greentins Technology Ltd HK, one of the pioneer innovators in the environmental protection industry of Hong Kong. Thomas has invested in the R&D of environmental friendly solutions and products, in hope of creating greeneries in a massive dense concrete jungle environment of Hong Kong.  An example is the microalgae, which absorbs carbon dioxide for air purification.

   

Tony Ip, Director, Tony Ip Green Architects Ltd

Tony Ip is a community-centric, sustainable design architect and urban designer based in Hong Kong. His passion and contributions to green architecture and creative industry were highly recognized by receiving HKIA Young Architect Award 2010, EcoStar Award 2014, Ten Outstanding Young Persons Award 2016 and Australia China Alumni Award for Arts & Creative Industry 2018.  In 2017, he founded Tony Ip Green Architects Ltd “TiP” (www.tonyip.green) with a vision of advocating the paradigm shift to green architecture and biophilic urban-scape at the tipping of climate change.


Serving community on a voluntary basis, Tony acts as Chairman of Hong Kong Architecture Centre, Director of YMCA of Hong Kong, School Manager of YMCA of Hong Kong Christian College, HKGBC Green Building Faculty and Vice Chairman of BSL Materials Aspects Expert Panel.  He also serves the Antiquities Advisory Board, the Environmental Campaign Committee and the Support Group on Long-term Decarbonization for Council for Sustainable Development of HKSAR.

   

Andrew Young, Associate Director (Innovation), Sino Inno Lab

Ir Andrew Young has over 34 years of executive experience in senior positions, including Director of Partnership Development for the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), Chief Commercial Officer of Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks Corporation.  In his current capacity as Associate Director (Innovation) for Sino Group, he has overall responsibility to explore and identify innovations and technologies for application in the Group and explore investment opportunities in technology ventures.  He has developed closely knitted and professional working relationships with leading and renowned institutions and innovation nodes in Hong Kong and around the world, including Imperial College, University of Oxford, University of Waterloo, Stanford University etc.


He is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), a Chartered Engineer and member of the Institutions of Engineers Australia, an Adjunct Professor with the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology (HKUST) and an adviser to Hamlyn Centre of Imperial College London as Chairman of the Translation Advisory Panel. He is a member of Knowledge Transfer Committee of the City University of Hong Kong (CityU), he serves on the Departmental Advisory Committee of the School of Optometry and Department of Mechanical Engineering of PolyU; Department of Electronics Engineering of CityU; and Centre for Entrepreneurship of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).  He also sits on various committees in leading commerce and industry associations and is active within the start-up and VC community.

   

Ir Cary Chan, JP, Executive Director, HKGBC

Ir Cary Chan is a professional engineer and is currently the Executive Director of Hong Kong Green Building Council.  Over the years, he has carried out a lot of researches and energy saving initiatives with substantial improvements in energy performance of buildings.  Some of his works have won international awards, which includes Client of the Year - Low Carbon Operation Award by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers in 2010.  Ir Chan is also active in serving the professional and business communities with his expertise. Recently, Ir Chan has been appointed as Justices of the Peace (JP) by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
