The smart building industry is poised to fight the COVID-19 virus with advanced solutions, as hygiene concerns fuel demand for touch-less technology. With the use of AI technologies and IoT sensors, part of the physical interactions can be shifted to personalised devices and mobile applications instead of using public devices. Also, biometric solutions play a major role in minimising contact with public surfaces yet achieving efficient access control and premises security. In the midst of this pandemic, it’s difficult to fully predict how COVID-19 may alter long-term living patterns. Going forward, though, these strategies will be an integral part of the planning and design of all smart building projects.

Ir Billy CHEUNG is Manager of Automation and ELV at ATAL Building Services Engineering Ltd. Billy holds a Master’s degree of Science in Electronic & Information Engineering from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and a Bachelor’s degree of Engineering in Electronic and Communications Engineering from The University of Hong Kong. He is a member of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) under the Control, Automation & Instrumentation Discipline and Electronics Discipline. He is also a CEM professional and BEAM Pro (NB). Billy obtained the LEED AP®  qualification in 2016 and in 2017, he became a member of Building Services Operation and Maintenance Executives Society (BSOMES). Billy has 15 years of experience in building services engineering specialising in intelligent and green building solutions.
