[Press Release] Jockey Club BEAM Plus in Schools Project came to a successful end!

Hong Kong, 26 September 2023 – The Closing Ceremony of the Jockey Club BEAM Plus in Schools Project was successfully held on 18 September 2023 (Monday). The event was attended by over 200 esteemed guests and school representatives. Ms Sing YIP, Manager (Charities) of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, Miss Miki CHAN, Assistant Secretary for Environment and Ecology (Energy)1 of the Environment and Ecology Bureau, The Government of the HKSAR , Mr Wallace LEUNG, Chief Engineer of Energy Efficiency Division B of the Electrical and Mechanical Service Department, The Government of the HKSAR , Mr Simon NG, Chief Executive Officer of the Business Environment Council, Dr CHEUNG Tin-cheung, SBS, Chairman of the Hong Kong Green Building Council, Ir Dr Cary CHAN, JP, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Green Building Council, Ir HO Chi-shing, General Manager of the BEAM Society Limited presented the first batch of BEAM Plus Existing Schools V1.0 certificate to the 125 schools participated in the Project. 

Funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, organised by Business Environment Council, and co-organised by Hong Kong Green Building Council and BEAM Society Limited, and supported by Education Bureau, Environment and Ecology Bureau, and Electrical and Mechanical Service Department, the 45-month Jockey Club BEAM Plus in Schools Project was launched to assist 125 primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong to reduce carbon footprint and promote the concepts of green building among the next generation. This ground-breaking Project assists schools in carrying out retrofitting works, launching a serious of educational activities to promote green building concept to the younger generation, and creating a brand new BEAM Plus Existing Schools assessment tool to certify the participating schools into green schools.
 

Hong Kong’s first BEAM Plus Existing Schools Assessment Tool to Foster Sustainable Campus
Ir Dr Cary CHAN, JP, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Green Building Council, remarked in his opening speech that green building plays a vital role in driving Hong Kong's carbon reduction goals. It is therefore of utmost importance to introduce green building certification in the school community. In addition to conducting retrofitting works in primary and secondary schools, the Project also developed the BEAM Plus Existing Schools V1.0 rating tool, which is the first assessment tool in Hong Kong specifically tailored for school sector. The tool simplifies the assessment process, focusing on the educational elements and encouraging the involvement of both teachers and students in the assessment process. By participating in the BEAM Plus Existing Schools assessment, schools transform into greener and healthier environments for learning, demonstrating strong leadership in sustainability commitment. 
 
 
Experience Sharing in Green Campus Leadership 
During the Closing Ceremony, Dr Patrick LAM, Chief Principal of ELCHK Lutheran Academy and Ms TAM Fung-ting, Principal of Ho Ming Primary School were invited to share their expertise in cultivating green campuses through hardware upgrades and environmental education. The Principals encouraged the school practitioners to join hands to move the sustainability journey forward.  
 

Nurturing a New Generation of Green Pioneers
Five Green Building Student Ambassadors from ELCHK Lutheran Secondary School and Ho Fung College (Sponsored by Sik Sik Yuen) shared their experiences in participating in the Student Ambassadors Programme of the Project. These young leaders also elaborated their works to promote green building at schools. Moreover, students from Ho Fung College also shared their school’s experience in implementing waste audit, demonstrating their proactive preparedness for the upcoming Municipal Solid Waste Charging to be enacted in Hong Kong in the coming year. 
 

The 45-month Jockey Club BEAM Plus in Schools Project brings together 125 primary and secondary schools to take a great leap forward to create a sustainable city in Hong Kong, fostering positive impacts in reducing carbon emissions and protecting the environment.
