[Press Release] Hong Kong Green Building Week 2021 Joins Hands with the Public to Experience Wellness and Complete Decarbonisation Missions via Interactive Hybrid Activities in Various Green Buildings
(Hong Kong, 25 September 2021) Co-organised by the Construction Industry Council (CIC) and the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC), the annual public campaign “Hong Kong Green Building Week 2021” (HKGBW 2021) will be held this year from 25 September to 1 October.
The theme of HKGBW 2021 is “Embrace Green Building – Decarbonise in One Step”. The Opening Ceremony will be held on the first day on 25 September to kick off a series of exciting activities with attractive prizes! The activities range from physical to online events, including the visit to several signature green buildings which integrate various art and culture elements, as well as energy saving and decarbonisation tips. The campaign wishes to educate the general public on a green life style so every one of us can easily contribute to decarbonisation in our daily lives and eventually lead to carbon neutrality!
Integrate physical activities with online games to promote green building and decarbonise in one step
The Opening Ceremony of Hong Kong Green Building Week 2021 will be held on the first day of the campaign at The Mills. Honourable guests including Mr WONG Kam-sing, GBS, JP, Secretary for the Environment, Mr Ivan FU, MH, JP, Chairperson of the Committee on Environment of the Construction Industry Council, and Mr CHEUNG Hau-wai, SBS, Chairman of the Hong Kong Green Building Council will kick off the event. Two weeks of physical and online activities will begin on the same day, and are expected to attract thousands of citizens to participate.
Six green buildings were selected this year for the highlighted event “Green Building Game Tour”, including International Commerce Centre (ICC), K11 MUSEA, Kowloon City Sewage Pumping Station No.1, Nina Mall, The Mills and Xiqu Centre (West Kowloon Cultural District). These buildings are known for their stunning cultural landmarks, building revitalisation and green infrastructure for the community. The tours will be conducted in two different formats, namely the “Expert-Guided Tour” led by BEAM Pro and the “Audio-Guided Tour” featured with Hong Kong famous singer-songwriter, Terence LAM Ka-him, and the popular radio host Bonnie WONG (Ah Jeng). On the tours, participants can set up their own accounts and complete the low-carbon missions on the game website. Participants will earn points and get a chance to win fabulous prizes!
The online activity “A-Z Green Building Decarbonisation Cards”, on the other hand, collaborates with local illustrators to connect green buildings and daily life with the element of art. Once again, this is to convey the message of decarbonisation and to encourage more public to join and practice low-carbon living.
To arouse the sense of decarbonisation among business people, the organisers have promoted the “Biz-Green Dress Day” initiative for years. The initiative attempts to reduce air-conditioning consumption by promoting light and breathable business attire, thereby achieving energy saving and carbon reduction. Over 150 companies participated in the “Biz-Green Dress Day” this year on 8 September. Two mascots, "Hanson" and "Green Building Buddy”, visited several offices to promote "green" clothing habits on the campaign day, and bring green measures into the commercial buildings. This campaign not only contributes to environmental sustainability, but also helps the office users to understand and develop green office culture. The video highlights of “Biz-Green Dress Day” will be uploaded to the Council’s website and Facebook page on 27 September.
Significant growth in the local green buildings with award recognition
As of December 2020, there are nearly 3,000 BEAM Plus certified buildings in Hong Kong. The number indicates the frequent use of sustainable designs and innovative construction methods by local construction contractors and other industry players. Taking one of the six green building partners of the campaign as an example, The Mills won the “Grand Award - Completed Projects - Commercial Building” in the “Green Building Award 2019” issued by HKGBC. The other five green building partners gained high recognition under the BEAM Plus rating tool for their contribution in creating a sustainable built environment for Hong Kong.
Green building concepts promote low-carbon lifestyle
BEAM Plus offers a comprehensive set of performance criteria for buildings on a wide range of sustainability issues relating to the planning, design, construction, and commissioning, etc. Around 200 new building projects are certified with BEAM Plus every year, and around 50% of the projects are rated Provisional Gold or Final Gold level and above.
