[Press Release] Record Number of Projects achieving the Highest BEAM Plus Platinum Rating

Recognising 31 projects
including the first BEAM Plus Platinum Project in the Mainland China

Hong Kong, 13 December 2016 – The Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC) and BEAM Society Limited (BSL) jointly organised the BEAM Plus Platinum Project Certification Ceremony today at Charles K. Kao Auditorium of Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks. It is honoured to have Ms Christine LOH Kung-wai, JP, Under Secretary for the Environment, Government of the HKSAR to be the Guest-of-Honour. Together with Mr CHAN Ka-kui, BBS, JP, Chairman of Construction Industry Council, Ir Cary CHAN, Executive Director of the HKGBC, and Prof. John NG, Chairperson of BSL cum Chairman of Green Labelling Committee of the HKGBC, a total of 31 projects were presented with the Platinum rating. The number of Platinum-rated projects reached a record high of 31 this year, indicating that green buildings are gaining support from the industry and the community as a whole.

A wide range of projects, in the categories of New Buildings (NB), Existing Buildings (EB) and Interiors (BI), attained the Platinum rating this year. These projects comprised commercial buildings, residential buildings, infrastructure, educational and institutional buildings, as well as offices. Furthermore, the first Platinum project from the Mainland China was recognised during the ceremony, marking another new milestone for BEAM Plus in the region.

"The Government strongly supports the development of green buildings and the promotion of energy efficiency to reduce carbon emissions. The Government is not only an ardent advocate of green buildings, but also an active player in the area. Many government buildings are also accredited by the BEAM Plus assessment, of which, some of them are Platinum certified, demonstrating the commitment for the government to go green,” said Ms Christine LOH.

Mr CHAN Ka-kui, the Chairman of Construction Industry Council, congratulated the project teams, saying that, “All BEAM Plus Platinum-rated projects have lived up to the best practices in waste reduction, environmental protection and innovative green technology. I believe with the strong support from the CIC and the concerted efforts of the entire building and construction sector, Hong Kong will be transformed into a green and sustainable city.”

Ir Cary CHAN, the Executive Director of HKGBC stated, “This year has been a fruitful year of BEAM Plus. According to a recent research done by HKGBC, BEAM Plus certified projects have contributed to a total of 700,000 square meters of green space, the area is equivalent to 70 Hong Kong Stadiums. In terms of energy saving, these projects are expected to save more than 400 million kWh of electricity consumption annually – the equal of the energy spending of more than 90,000 households combined in a year. As for water saving, BEAM Plus projects are expected to save more than a total of 6 billion liters of water, amounting to the total consumption of around 30,000 households. The results are encouraging and we would like to take this opportunity to thank CIC for supporting the development of BEAM Plus.”

Prof. John NG, Chairperson of BSL cum Chairman of Green Labelling Committee of the HKGBC praised the increasing number of projects achieving Platinum rating under BEAM Plus Existing Buildings. With over 20 projects registered for BEAM Plus Existing Building V2.0 since its launch in March this year, Prof. Ng expected more steady growth in registrations in the coming year. He further added, “with the Government advocating the importance of energy efficiency in buildings, the industry would join hands to raise the standard of the existing buildings stocks, more projects would attain the Platinum Award in future”.

The development of BEAM Plus is wholly funded by the Construction Industry Council. Certified by the HKGBC and assessed by BSL, BEAM Plus offers a comprehensive set of performance criteria for a wide range of sustainability issues relating to the planning, design, construction, commissioning, management, operation and maintenance of a building. By providing a fair and objective assessment of a building’s overall performance throughout its life cycle, BEAM Plus enables organisations and companies of all sizes to demonstrate their commitment to sustainable development.

As of 1 December 2016, about 900 projects have registered for BEAM Plus assessment. Among them, approximately 41% are residential buildings with another 17% and 16% being commercial and Government, Institution and Community projects respectively.
