Hong Kong, 17 February 2016 – The Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC) held the Recognition Scheme Award Presentation cum Green Tenancy Driver Training Toolkit Launching Ceremony today. Mr CHEUNG Hau-wai, SBS, Chairman of the HKGBC, together with Ms Christine LOH Kung-wai, JP, Under Secretary for the Environment and Mr John KWONG, Chief Assistant Secretary (Works) 1, Development Bureau, Government of the HKSAR, as well as representatives from various awarded organisations joined the ceremony to show their support in building Hong Kong towards a sustainable city and shared the joy of contributing to a green economy. Appreciation certificates were presented to construction materials companies awarded with the HKGBC Green Product Accreditation and Standards (HK G-PASS) as well as the office occupants or buildings awarded with the HKGBC Benchmarking and Energy Saving Tool (HK BEST) to praise them for their contribution towards green building. During the ceremony, the HKGBC also launched the first Green Tenancy Driver Training Toolkit (Training Toolkit) and announced the addition of product categories in Phase 2A of HK G-PASS with a view to spreading green messages to the society.
Ms Christine LOH Kung-wai, JP, Under Secretary for the Environment pointed out that green buildings bring us a comfortable and healthy environment, and appealed to the public to use green building products and adopt energy saving policies, so as to live a low carbon life.

Low-carbon economy has become a global focus since the signing of Paris Agreement at the 2015 United Climate Change Conference (COP21) last December. Green building is essential to the development of low-carbon modern city. Led by the growing trend of green construction, related industries such as environmentally friendly construction materials, green building technology, green property management and recycling will see a prosperous market in the near future and will play a key role in fostering the sustainable development in the 21st century.

HK G-PASS provides a practical and recognised standard for industry practitioners as well as end users to compare the greenness of different construction materials and make smart purchase. The scheme helps them distinguish safer, healthier, more pragmatic and efficient sustainable building products from existing traditional ones, thereby extending the buildings' life cycle. Green building product not only reduces waste but also creates green business opportunities. The scheme comprises five different ratings, namely Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze and Green, covering 15 product categories in the first phase. The following eight construction materials products are awarded with HK G-PASS:

During the ceremony, the HKGBC also announced the addition of five new product categories under HK G-PASS Phase 2A. It can encourage more construction materials companies to apply for the assessment scheme to join forces to build a low-carbon city. The additional five product categories of HK G-PASS are:
HK BEST consists of two categories including Office Occupants (HK BESTOO) and Office Buildings (HK BESTOF). It is an energy performance assessment tool for office premises and buildings. Users just need to input the energy usage data of office premises or buildings and engage an authorised assessor for audit, analysis and evaluation. The Training Toolkit encourages office tenants and occupants to develop green tenancy relationship bytaking the first step of Green Tenancy Driver - raising green awareness. The Training Toolkit covers four key aspects, including energy efficiency, water conservation, waste reduction and paper reduction. It is conducive in creating a green working environment, promoting green leasing and laying down the foundation of green economy.
