Swire Properties Unveils New Sustainable Development 2050 Vision and Strategy


Swire Properties recently launched its Sustainable Development (SD) 2050 Vision and Strategy. Guided by a new SD vision, "Building the World's Most Sustainable Communities", the new strategy aims to lead transformative changes in the built environment by harmonising business, people and nature, while also supporting the Company’s ambitious business growth plans in Hong Kong, the Chinese Mainland and Southeast Asia.

Focused on four long-term commitments – Zero Harm, Net-Zero Carbon, Zero Waste to Landfill and Water Neutrality – the new Strategy will continue to drive impactful change through a total of 140 ambitious targets over the next decade, with innovative strategies across five strategic pillars: Places, People, Partners, Planet and Performance. 

Key strategic targets include:
  • Climate Transition: Deliver on near term, long term and net zero emissions targets validated under the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) Buildings Criteria, as the first real estate company in Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland to have such targets validated;
  • Nature and Biodiversity: Through its new Nature Transition Plan, deliver nature-positive outcomes across the whole building lifecycle, from land acquisition and procurement to integrating nature-positive solutions into new development projects during the planning and design stages; 
  • Tenant Engagement Programmes: Commit to engage 70% of office tenants in the Green Performance Pledge, 100 of retail tenants in the Green Retail Partnership and 35% of food and beverage tenants in the Green Kitchen Initiative by 2030;
  • Supplier Engagement: Engage 100% of suppliers in sustainability/ESG risk screening and expand sustainable procurement targets across new development projects, existing portfolios and hotels;
  • Investment in People: Achieve zero harm in occupational health and safety, enhance employee and candidate experience, foster diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB), support employee wellbeing, and reflect Swire Properties’ culture and values;
  • Social Value Creation: Refresh the Company’s Community Investment Strategy and introduce a new Social Value Creation Framework, for more structured and measurable impact;
  • Green Finance: Commit to having more than 90% of bond and loan facilities from green financing by 2035.

Saint-Gobain Architecture Student Contest 2026 – Hong Kong Stage Showcases Emerging Design Talent

 
 
 
Co-organised by Saint-Gobain and The Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA), the Saint-Gobain Architecture Student Contest 2026 – Hong Kong Stage concluded successfully on 8 May 2026 at the HKIA Premises, bringing together rising architectural talents from Hong Kong and Macau for a day of ideas, innovation, and sustainable design.

Nine university teams presented design proposals focused on the construction and renovation of a recreational area in Belgrade, Serbia. Their concepts demonstrated creativity, technical thinking, and forward-looking solutions, earning praise from both the judging panel and the audience.
 
 

Following the jury's deliberation, the winning team was announced as Carmen LAU Kai-yan, Ingrid FUNG Wing-in, and LIAO Ho-ngai from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. The team received a prize of HK$10,000 and will represent Hong Kong on the international stage of the contest in Belgrade, Serbia, this June.

The programme also featured an expert-led panel discussion titled "Sustainable Architecture: Designing Delight for Tourism & Recreational Projects". The session provided students and guests with practical insights into sustainable design strategies, while examining how architecture can enrich the experience of tourism and leisure developments.

Saint-Gobain expressed appreciation to all participants and supporting partners, including the Hong Kong Green Building Council, the Hong Kong Institute of Architects, and the Architects Association of Macau, for their contributions to the event’s success, and looks forward to another strong edition of the competition next year.

HKGBC Members’ Visit to Shenzhen – Strengthening Regional Exchange in Green Building Development

 

 
The Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC) organised a Members' Visit to Shenzhen on 12 May 2026, offering a valuable opportunity for first-hand exploration of pioneering green building developments in the Greater Bay Area. The visit brought together 27 participants, including HKSAR Government representatives as well as HKGBC's Chairman, Directors, Members and Secretariat. Through technical visits and professional dialogue, the visitors were able to gain deeper insights into advancements in zero-carbon buildings, low-carbon practices, innovative technologies and sustainable urban development

Visit Highlights:
 
  • IBR Future Complex: This visionary project demonstrates the concept of a “breathing and growing” building, integrating vertical greenery with a fully DC-powered office system. The project has been recognised as “Best Design Foresight – Built” of the Active House Awards, and selected as a Shenzhen Near-Zero Energy Building Pilot Project.
  • IBR Headquarters: A benchmark for low-energy office design tailored to hot summer and warm winter climates, the headquarters emphasises human-centric design alongside advanced smart building technologies enabled by HarmonyOS. This 3-Star Certified China Green Building project has also received numerous accolades, including First Prize in the National Green Building Innovation Award; Finalist in the WorldGBC Asia Pacific Leadership in Green Building Awards 2014, under the Leadership in Sustainable Design and Performance category; and a Merit Award in the Green Building Award 2010 under New Buildings Category – Asia Pacific (Commercial Projects).
  • China Resources Tower: Inspired by the elegant form of a bamboo shoot, this iconic development blends oriental aesthetics with modern sustainable design. It is supported by a high-performance cooling system and intelligent environmental controls to enhance occupant comfort. Recognised as a 3-Star Certified China Green Building, it has also been honoured with the China Construction Engineering Luban Prize and other green building recognitions.
 

This one-day programme provided insightful exposure to Shenzhen’s rapidly-evolving green building landscape and demonstrated how innovation and collaboration are driving sustainable transformation across the region. The visit was made possible with the strong support and thoughtful co-ordination of the Shenzhen Institute of Building Research (IBR), Shenzhen Construction Engineering Standards Institute (SZCESI) and Shenzhen Green Building Association (SGBA), whose warm hospitality and expertise enabled meaningful exchange and will facilitate future collaboration opportunities.

Building on this, the HKGBC looks forward to fostering deeper collaboration within the Greater Bay Area and advancing collective efforts towards net-zero goals and a more sustainable built environment.
 
 


HKGBC Session at Build4Asia 2026 – Empowering Smart Energy Transformation in the Greater Bay Area

 
As a Strategic Partner of Build4Asia 2026, the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC) was pleased to co-host a successful session at the Build4Asia Forum on 7 May. Under the theme “Empowering Smart Energy Transformation in the Greater Bay Area”, the session featured four distinguished speakers with expertise and practical experience in retro-commissioning and retrofitting in the Greater Bay Area, and was well received by over 80 attending professionals. They discussed forward‑looking strategies and success stories focused on smart energy transition supporting regional low‑carbon transformation. 
 
 
The session opened with welcome remarks by Ir Harry LAI of the Hong Kong Green Building Council. Prof. YAN Jun-wei from the South China University of Technology then shared valuable insights into the latest retro-commissioning trends and implementation pathways in the Greater Bay Area during his keynote speech. The programme continued with presentations on three award-winning projects from the “Intelligent Energy Saving Contest for Buildings in the Guangdong‑Hong Kong‑Macao Greater Bay Area”. These were Taikoo Hui Guangzhou presented by Ms Jean QIN from Swire Properties (China) Investment; the Office Building of Shenzhen Futian Power Supply Bureau, China Southern Power Grid, presented by Mr Steven XIONG from Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI); and the Hang Seng Bank Headquarters Building presented by Mr Lewis CHENG from Hang Seng Bank. All these projects showcase successful practical experience in retro-commissioning and retrofitting that can improve building efficiency, sustainability and cost-effectiveness across the region.

ATAL Tower Attains BEAM Plus New Buildings Final Platinum Rating, Showcasing Outstanding Industrial Building Revitalisation

 
ATAL Tower, an industrial building revitalisation project, has attained Final Platinum Rating under the BEAM Plus New Buildings V2.0, demonstrating ATAL Engineering Group’s outstanding contribution to green building development in Hong Kong.

An on‑site certificate presentation ceremony was held on 7 May, in which Dr CHEUNG Tin-cheung, Chairman of the HKGBC, presented the BEAM Plus certificate to Dr Otto POON Lok-to, Founder and Executive Director of ATAL Engineering Group. Also present to witness this fine achievement were Dr Kim MAK Kin-wah, Chairman and Executive Director of ATAL Engineering Group; Dr Sammy WAN, Corporate Sustainability Director; and Mr Rocky FUNG, Project Manager.

ATAL Tower exemplifies the successful application of the BEAM Plus New Buildings rating tool through the revamp of a traditional industrial facility into an advanced smart building. It also demonstrates the seamless integration of innovative building technology with sustainable design principles, and offers a valuable illustration of HKSAR Government's Revitalisation Scheme for Industrial Buildings. The Tower is equipped with a “Smart Building Platform” intelligent building management system developed in-house by ATAL, enabling comprehensive management of its environment and facilities. In addition it incorporates multiple energy-efficient measures that significantly optimise energy efficiency and occupant comfort. Dedicated spaces have been allocated for frontier technology research and the training of young talent. These initiatives affirm ATAL’s dedication to green technology development and corporate social responsibility.
