HKGBC Green Building Young Leaders Programme (2024-2025): Stories from the Public Team
With guidance from mentor Ar. Dr Tony IP, MH, the Public Team actively participated in community initiatives aimed at promoting green building concepts to the public, highlighting how these principles are closely intertwined with our everyday lives. By seeking participation from people of different ages and backgrounds, the team strove to make green building ideas more approachable, relatable and meaningful to the wider community.

Inspiring Young Minds
One of the most memorable experiences for Matthew was serving as a host for the filming of a Virtual Green Building Tour under the Jockey Club Energy Saver in Schools Project. Through an engaging VR format, he presented the green design features of AIRSIDE, transforming green building education into a fun and inspiring experience while making sustainability strategies accessible to those who might not be able to visit the site in person. It was a process that reshaped Matthew’s perspectives, leading him to realise that green buildings were not only about engineering solutions, but also about connecting people, the community and the environment in meaningful ways.
In addition, the Public Team took part in the "My Green Space" Student Competition Training Workshops, where they introduced primary school students to green building concepts in a simple and engaging way. They explained what defines a green building and the key aspects used for evaluating one, helping students develop an early awareness of sustainability in the built environment. Their guidance encouraged students to think creatively and begin designing their own ideal green building for the competition, inspiring them to imagine Hong Kong's future as a green and sustainable city.

Driving Community Participation
Recognising the importance of promoting sustainability for the wider community, the team joined the Green Transport X Building Tour as tour ambassadors during Hong Kong Green Building Week (HKGBW). By transforming a moving tram into a dynamic and interactive classroom, they brought green building concepts vividly to life. The initiative grew beyond a tour and evolved into a platform through which people of all ages could connect, ask questions, and experience green living in action.
The tour experience strengthened Zoe’s mission to “seed” the idea of a liveable, green city in the minds of people from all walks of life, demonstrating that green building is not a niche technical field but a shared responsibility and an integral part of everyday living. By inviting the community aboard the tram and encouraging open dialogue along its journey, the team helped foster a collective vision that could empower future leaders, neighbours, families and other citizens to take part in shaping a more sustainable Hong Kong.

Enhancing Industry-Public Connection
Another part of the team’s outreach efforts involved participating in the Green Building Fair during the HKGBW to highlight the latest industry innovations and bridge the gap between the green building sector and the wider public. The event showcased how new technologies and design solutions could make buildings greener while enhancing the occupants’ well-being, making sustainability more relatable to people from all walks of life. Although innovation and technology may not always seem appealing or easy to understand, the young leaders’ live demonstrations and explanations transformed complex concepts into memorable, hands-on learning moments, turning cold and complicated terms into something people could see, feel and experience.
Empowering Growth through Mentorship
Under the guidance of Ar. Dr Tony IP, the team gained profound insights into how sustainability leadership could transform vision into real industry impact through strong collaboration between architects, engineers, developers and policymakers. This experience reaffirmed Carol's belief that sustainability was not merely a technical challenge but a multidisciplinary mission driven by shared purpose and collective leadership. These reflections strengthened her long-term aspirations, inspiring her to pursue further studies in Energy and Sustainability at the University of Cambridge.

Recruitment for the third cohort (2026–2027) of the GBYL Programme is opening soon. The Council calls on all young visionaries to step forward if they would like to take the lead in building a sustainable future for Hong Kong. Participants will have the opportunity to build industry connections, cultivate leadership skills, and transform ideas into meaningful contributions to the community. Join this impactful journey and influence change for a more sustainable city!
