Rethinking Built Spaces: WSP at ReThink HK 2025

The conversation about Hong Kong’s sustainable future reached new momentum at ReThink HK 2025. Speaking under the HKGBC "Rethinking Built Spaces" Session, WSP and other speakers went beyond sharing expertise to bring a vision of how innovation can transform the way we design, build, and live in our cities.

Mr Paul KAU, WSP’s Earth & Environment Managing Director, was invited to join the conversation with experts from Henderson Land, Schneider Electric and Hliti, three key players in the built environment industry. Paul highlighted WSP’s practical solutions for tracking embodied carbon and reducing carbon footprint of buildings – with a particular focus on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).

The speakers’ focus was clear: turning technology into tangible impact. From tracking embodied carbon to enhancing wellness and driving energy efficiency across the building lifecycle, Paul and other speakers demonstrated how digital tools and sustainable materials are already delivering results through real‑world applications and forward‑looking strategies. These are not distant ambitions – they are practical solutions accelerating the transition to a low‑carbon economy today.

The discussions revealed a vital truth: sustainability and health in our buildings are inseparable. Greener materials, smarter energy use, and data-driven design are no longer optional – they are essential for safer, more comfortable buildings and spaces that could be enjoyed by the users and the public.

Beyond the technical insights, the event underscored a powerful reminder: collaboration is the catalyst for lasting change. ReThink HK provided a platform for WSP to engage with peers, policymakers, and practitioners, reinforcing our commitment to lead by example and partner with others to achieve carbon neutrality. With WSP's technical expertise in the built and natural environment, from engineering to advisory, WSP is ready to show and assist its partners and clients on how strategies and latest technologies can be scaled and integrated, turning ambition into measurable progress.

WSP believes the future of Hong Kong’s built environment lies in rethinking spaces not just for efficiency, but for resilience, wellness, and sustainability. Together, we can build a greener, healthier city for all.

International Expert Luncheon – A Powerful Gathering with Global Minds

On 5 September 2025, the Hong Kong Green Building Council proudly hosted the International Expert Luncheon, bringing together over 80 green building professionals from 50 Patron Member Organisations for an afternoon of meaningful dialogue, professional exchange, and global insights. The event served as a valuable platform to foster collaboration and deepen the collective commitment to advancing sustainability in the built environment.

From left to right: Ms Grace KWOK, Director of HKGBC & WorldGBC, Mr Jorge CHAPA, Chief Impact Officer of the Green Building Council Australia, Dr CHEUNG Tin-cheung, Chairman of HKGBC, Ms Natalie MOSSIN, Head of the Institute of Architecture & Technology of the Royal Danish Academy and Ir Harry LAI, Executive Director of HKGBC.

We were honoured to welcome two distinguished international thought leaders, Ms Natalie MOSSIN, Head of the Institute of Architecture & Technology of the Royal Danish Academy, and Mr Jorge CHAPA, Chief Impact Officer of the Green Building Council Australia.

Ms MOSSIN delivered a compelling message that sustainability not only transcends borders but is also a universal imperative that demands inclusive and innovative approaches. Her insights on architectural transformation and social equity resonated deeply with attendees, offering a timely reminder of the power of design to drive systemic change.

Mr CHAPA shared a comprehensive overview of global sustainability trends, underscoring the increasing alignment of standards across regions. He highlighted the pivotal role of circular procurement and low-impact construction practices in building climate resilience, and encouraged stakeholders to embrace bold strategies that can accelerate the transition to net zero.

Against the backdrop of a month marked by extreme weather events and multiple black rainstorms in Hong Kong, the Luncheon provided a welcome opportunity to regroup, reflect, and re-energise. It was a moment to reaffirm our shared mission and explore new pathways towards a more sustainable future.

Conclusion and Award Ceremony of “My Green Space” Student Competition 2024-2025

Organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC), and solely sponsored by the Chinachem Group, the Award Presentation Ceremony of “My Green Space” Student Competition 2024-2025 was successfully held on 2 September at D‧Park. The event was officially opened by Dr CHEUNG Tin-cheung, SBS, Chairman of the Hong Kong Green Building Council, with Mr Ben HUNG Chi-pan, Chief Curriculum Development Officer (Moral, Civic and National Education) of the Education Bureau, as the Guest of Honour, as well as Ms Amy WU, Director of Corporate Communications of Chinachem Group, as special guest. Members of the Competition Task Force and Judging Panel joined the celebration, alongside over 120 attending teachers, parents and participating students, honouring students’ achievements and enjoying the sharing sessions led by winning student representatives.

Themed “My Ideal Green and Smart City”, this tenth edition of the Competition attracted a record-breaking participation of over 500 local primary, secondary, and tertiary students, with winning students also coming from tertiary institutions in the Greater Bay Area for the first time. It was heartening to see students thoughtfully integrating sustainable concepts into their designs, such as interdisciplinary and intergenerational elements—some teams gathered students from different faculties and even planned for community living rooms and retirement homes in their designs. They also incorporated practical, real-world considerations, including site selection and material usage, which elevated the level of their entries. This attention to detail was warmly applauded by the guests and judges.

Throughout the Competition, the Council aimed to inspire students to develop a genuine interest in green building and deepen their understanding of its principles and standards. From entry preparation and green building tours to seminar participation, final assessment presentations and the award ceremony, the Council was committed to providing opportunities for students and teachers to exchange ideas with green building professionals. Every step of the way, students were encouraged to nurture their creative thinking and turn their ideas into action—moving from concept to solution, making behavioural changes for a greener lifestyle, and ultimately spreading these ideas to family members and peers. This holistic approach helped to foster the integration of knowledge and best practices in environmental education. We are confident that the skills and knowledge gained through the Competition will be useful to all these students in the future, empowering them to contribute to the advancement of green building and sustainability, and helping the community to develop ideal green spaces together.
