Wheelock Properties Has Launched its Business and Sustainability Report 2024



Wheelock Properties has released its Business and Sustainability Report 2024, reaffirming its commitment to core sustainability principles and the three-pillar ESG strategy. The report highlights a holistic approach to sustainability that is deeply ingrained in the Company’s business and operations. Prepared in alignment with the HKEX ESG Reporting Guide and with reference to the GRI Universal Standards, the report has also received endorsement from a broad range of stakeholders. 

2024 Wheelock Properties Sustainability Highlights

1) Creating a positive impact on the environment

On the ecosphere - Wheelock achieved a four-year consecutive reduction in overall GHG intensity, while maintaining a high construction waste recycling rate of 73%, exceeding its original KPI of 35%.

What Wheelock builds: 100% attained BEAM Plus Gold or above rating - The Company is committed to green buildings and has consistently obtained at least "Gold" rating under the BEAM Plus certification for all new developments over the past 9 years.

Community engagement - The Company successfully engaged over 1.71 million people through initiatives and events hosted by Club Wheelock and its partners, achieving a 43% increase compared to last year. Key initiatives included SEASONS PLACE Coastal Run and WLAB’s Inclusive Cities Summit. 

2) Delivering quality experiences and trusted partnerships

Continued growth in sustainable finance - Wheelock actively embraces green finance and integrates ESG considerations into its financing framework. Sustainability-linked loans now comprise 78% of the Company’s corporate loan portfolio, representing a 59% increase compared to the end of 2023.

Endorsed build well - The Company was honoured with a range of industry awards during 2024, including the prestigious RICS CSR Project of the Year-Winner, recognitions from the Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors Awards and HKMA Sustainability Award, and attainment of ISO standards for its managed properties.

3) Developing long term enduring value 

Adding value in urban development - Wheelock’s first transitional housing project, Lok Sin Village, officially welcomed its first residents in 2024. Marking a significant milestone, it is Hong Kong’s first project to reuse, recycle, and relocate Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) components. Expected to benefit over 10,000 residents throughout its operational cycle, Lok Sin Village stands as the largest transitional housing development in Tai Po. Through the Transitional Housing and Land Sharing Pilot Scheme, Wheelock is providing a total of 19,351 units to local community.

For the future generation - Wheelock focuses on nurturing the next generation through a diverse range of programmes organised in collaboration with its valued partners, including Project WeCan, WIND, and the Hong Chi Association. As of 2024, Project WeCan has positively impacted the lives of over 98,000 students from 82 schools throughout Hong Kong.

About the Award 
The biennial Green Building Award has been jointly organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC) and the Professional Green Building Council (PGBC) since 2010, and was inaugurated by the PGBC in 2006. 

Taking the theme of "Towards Carbon Neutrality • Excellence in Sustainable Built Environment", GBA 2025 covers five categories: New Buildings (NB), Existing Buildings (EB), Research & Planning (RP), Building Products & Technologies (BPT), and Green Building Leadership (GBL). Industry practitioners are invited to nominate outstanding projects and organisations across all these categories.

Official Launch of BEAM Plus Existing Buildings Version 3.0

 
The Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC) and BEAM Society Limited (BSL) held the official launch ceremony of BEAM Plus Existing Buildings (EB) Version 3.0 at the Sky Lobby of the International Commerce Centre (ICC) on 7 July 2025, where six existing building projects participating in the pilot assessment received their certificates. The occasion saw the online and offline presence of over 200 industry leaders and experts, who gathered to celebrate the introduction of this upgraded tool and express their support for the green development of the city’s existing buildings towards net-zero emissions by 2050.

The ceremony was officiated by Ms Bernadette LINN Hon-ho, JP, Secretary for Development of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China. She was joined by Mr Nicholas HO Lik-chi, Commissioner for Belt and Road of the HKSAR Government; Mr Vincent CHOW Hau-keung, JP, Acting Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services, the HKSAR Government; Sr Frankie SO Hung Fai, Chairperson of BSL; and Dr CHEUNG Tin-cheung, SBS, Chairman of HKGBC. These esteemed guests came together to witness the comprehensive upgrade of BEAM Plus Existing Buildings and its commitment to promoting sustainable practices.

The BEAM Plus EB V3.0 (Beta Version) introduced last year saw the active participation of six exemplary projects, ranging from government bodies to property management companies, non-governmental organisations and private enterprises. During the ceremony, the project representatives shared their experiences and insights in using the new version, demonstrating their commitment to sustainable development.

BEAM Plus EB V3.0 introduces a number of enhancements. In addition to the traditional comprehensive assessment approach, the new version also addresses evolving demands by introducing a theme certification mechanism that provides tailored flexibility for projects with diverse certification needs. The new version focuses on the practicality of the assessment tools by streamlining assessments and improving submission processes. The redesigned rating methodology further encourages greater participation amongst local existing buildings to enhance their energy efficiency and environmental management measures by eliminating pre-assessment procedures, streamlining assessment processes, and adopting a transparent rating methodology.

HKGBC Session at Build4Asia 2025 – Advancing Sustainable Built Environments through Material Solutions and Retrofitting Innovations

 
As the Strategic Partner of the Build4Asia Conference 2025, the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC) was pleased to co-host a successful session on 15 July 2025. Centred on the theme of "Advancing Sustainable Built Environments through Material Solutions and Retrofitting Innovations", this session brought together 10 distinguished speakers from HKGBC Patron Members. They showcased innovative building materials and products, and forward-thinking retrofitting strategies, providing the industry with valuable and actionable insights.
   
 

First-Half Session: Advanced Green Building Materials and Product Solutions

The first half of the session spotlighted green building materials and products, providing impressive solutions and project references aimed at enhancing overall building performance. Mr Daniel YEUNG from Carrier Hong Kong Limited shared his insights on an AI-powered HVAC system that optimises energy efficiency and indoor comfort. Mr Harris CHEUK from Orientop Building Material Limited and Ms Leila LI from Masterkote Solarshield Technology Limited introduced non-intrusive retrofit glazing systems and transvision solarshade solutions respectively, vividly illustrating these novel façade applications. Mr Kenny KO and Ms Vivian CHOW from Palmax (Pacific Asia) Limited presented an eco-acoustic spray made from recycled waste paper, exemplifying how technology can translate into environmentally friendly and practical product solutions.

Second-Half Session: Real-Life Case Studies on Retrofitting Strategies

The second half of the session delved into the theme of retrofitting, featuring four real-life case studies across diverse building scenarios. Mr Howard YEUNG from Kai Shing Management Services Limited and Dr SHAN Kui from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University presented the smart control optimisation achieved at ICC. Drawing on retrofitting experience across Link’s asset portfolio, Mr Thomas LI from Link Asset Management Limited demonstrated how large-scale implementation of energy management and automation systems can significantly enhance energy efficiency. Mr Patrick HUANG from Swire Properties Limited showcased the transformation of kitchen space at FEAST (Food by EAST) in EAST Hong Kong into a greener, more energy-efficient environment, while Mr Arthur LI from JF Thermal System Limited highlighted the case of Hyatt Regency Hong Kong, Shatin, explaining how heat pump retrofitting has improved both thermal comfort and energy consumption.
