'A Sustainable Future – Pioneering MiMEP Innovation' Summit – Leading the Way in Sustainable Development!

The 'A Sustainable Future – Pioneering MiMEP Innovation' Summit, jointly hosted by Hysan Development and Chinachem Group, concluded successfully on 10 December 2024. The event highlighted the successful, most extensive adoption of Multi-trade integrated Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MiMEP) in the Lee Garden Eight development project in Causeway Bay.

Gathering over 1,000 participants, including policymakers and industry experts, the Summit emphasised the importance of innovative construction methods like MiMEP for Hong Kong's economic competitiveness and sustainable development. The Summit was graced by Ms Bernadette LINN, JP, Secretary for Development, The Government of the HKSAR, who made the Opening Remarks. She emphasised the importance of driving innovation in the construction industry through the adoption of sustainable construction technologies, including MiMEP method.

Mr Ricky LUI, Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of Hysan Development, shared how MiMEP is transforming the construction and business landscape, particularly in Hysan's signature development project Lee Garden Eight, where MiMEP has been adopted on an unprecedented scale in the private sector. MiMEP is not just a tool but a comprehensive strategy that combines sustainability with operational excellence, setting an example for urban development in Hong Kong.

In Leaders Dialogue, industry stakeholders discussed MiMEP's potential in addressing challenges such as workforce aging, carbon emissions reduction, and faster construction timelines. Policy support, commercial viability, talent development and technological advancement were highlighted as essential for driving construction innovation.

The Roundtable Discussion focused on Lee Garden Eight as a case study for successful MiMEP implementation, emphasising the need for professional development in Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) and on-site installation skills, and the importance of close collaboration within the ecosystem. The discussion also explored the positive impact of sustainable practices on the office leasing market, where tenants increasingly prioritise eco-friendly and efficient spaces.

Lee Garden Eight marks a major strategic expansion of Hysan's core footprint, adding approximately 1.1 million square feet to its asset portfolio. The project will bring a multitude of benefits to the community with a number of sustainable features, including 60,000 square feet of green landscape in the form of an urban park, footbridge connections to enhance connectivity and walkability, as well as measures to enhance resource efficiency in areas such as energy consumption, renewable energy, waste management and water conservation to provide an eco-friendly and comfortable environment for tenants and visitors. The project aims to obtain the highest ratings of green and wellness certificates internationally and locally. Notably, over 2.7 million square feet of Hysan's GFA portfolio in Causeway Bay is already certified as green buildings, further reinforcing the company's commitment to sustainability.

Hong Kong Green Shop Alliance Award 2024 Presentation Ceremony – Fostering a Greener Shopping Environment with Malls and Shops

The Hong Kong Green Shop Alliance Award 2024 (HKGSA 2024) Presentation Ceremony, funded by the Construction Industry Council (CIC) and organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC), was successfully held on 10 December 2024. Over 100 guests came together to laud the remarkable contributions made by the winning shopping malls and shops in promoting a green shopping environment in Hong Kong throughout the past year.

The HKGSA Award marked its fifth edition this year. In addition to the regular commendation on the industry’s green stories and collaborative projects, this year’s event introduced the new “Excellent Green Practices Award” to further enhance industry engagement and participation in the field of waste management. This new Award recognises the efforts of shopping malls and shops in waste reduction and supports the Government's waste reduction and recycling initiatives.

Ir Prof. Steve WONG, Chairman of the Environment & Sustainability Committee of The Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce presented the awards to the winning organisations.

To promote industry exchange and collaboration, Ir Prof. Steve WONG, Chairman of the Environment & Sustainability Committee of The Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, shared valuable insights on sustainable business strategies in the retail sector at a special session titled "Balancing Green Together". He applied a simple and precise formula to illustrate the factors of implementing green measures in malls’ and shops’ operations, including the application of green technology, and the power of continuous actions and collaboration. CPD Event – Technical Visit to The Henderson, a New Green Building Icon

On 7 December, the HKGBC organised an inspirational new CPD event for green building practitioners: a technical visit to The Henderson. The event attracted an enthusiastic group of 40 practitioners, who learnt how smart green principles are integrated into modern buildings to achieve sustainable development goals.

The green building practitioners took a group photo in front of the art piece located in the 3/F lobby of The Henderson.

The event began with a sharing session. Representatives from Henderson Land Development Company Limited, Arup, WSP Asia Limited, ATAL Technologies Limited, and Intelli Global Corporation Limited shared diverse perspectives on integrating smart designs to enhance sustainability. Their presentations highlighted the key features of The Henderson, including hybrid ventilation that facilitates natural airflow throughout the offices during moderate weather conditions, the building’s high-tech four-ply, double-curved insulated glass facade, and its Lift Sterilisation Pod.

During the guided tour, participants visited Cloud 39, located on the top floor of The Henderson. Hong Kong’s highest all-glass-skylight banquet hall, the venue’s design is inspired by a Bauhinia bud about to blossom. The banquet hall features an 8m-high clear glass ceiling and a column-free layout that offers panoramic views of the city’s skyline. After exploring the interior, the group proceeded to Chater Garden to view the building’s impressive exterior from afar.

Ir Dr Edward CHAN, Deputy General Manager of the Project Management Department of Henderson Land Development Co. Ltd., welcomed the green building practitioners and introduced the various smart design elements within the building and Cloud 39.

Recognised as an icon of sustainable commercial architecture in Hong Kong, The Henderson has achieved pre-certified ratings from multiple green and healthy building designations, including BEAM Plus Provisional Platinum rating, and WELL Core and Shell Platinum Level Pre-certification. Its operations incorporate patented technology and IoT capabilities, such as energy-efficient climate control and real-time outdoor weather monitoring, to enhance sustainability and create a vibrant environment for occupants and the surrounding community.

Participants visited Chater Garden to enjoy the panoramic view of the building, marking a successful conclusion to the event.
