Arup's Pre-COP28 'Race to Transition' Asia Event Series Successfully Concluded

Arup, a global sustainable development consultancy, has successfully concluded its pre-COP28 'Race to Transition' Asia event series, calling for collective climate action to shape a more sustainable future.

The event series happened as world leaders gear up for the upcoming COP28 in Dubai to address the findings from the First Global Stocktake and accelerate ambition to limit global warming to 1.5˚C. Held in strategic partnerships with Civic Exchange, ICE Hong Kong, Resilient Cities Network, and World Resources Institute, the series took place in Hong Kong, Manila, Tokyo and Shanghai, attracting over 1,300 people joining online and in-person.

Dr Andy Lee, East Asia Region Chair, Arup said, "The initiative aims to foster cross-sectoral, cross-disciplinary cooperation and drive transformative climate action. We aspire to co-create integrated solutions to our shared challenge, leveraging our expertise and commitment to sustainability to accelerate our collective transition to a net-zero future."

Hong Kong: Collaborating For A Greener Future

The series kicked off at the CIC-Zero Carbon Park in Hong Kong, co-organised by the Hong Kong Green Finance Association (HKGFA) and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) Sustainable Business Network.

The consensus is that collaboration is key to integrating diverse expertise and resources, amplifying efforts, and achieving greater impacts. With the government leading society’s green transformation, businesses can take the opportunity to translate the macro policies into actionable initiatives, driving meaningful changes through collaborative efforts across sectors.

Manila: Enhancing Resilience For Future Water Infrastructure

In Manila, water experts explored ways to enhance future water infrastructure in response to increasing extreme weather events. The focus should shift from mitigation alone to include adaptive planning. Integrated water management is essential for our cities, prompting us to rethink about assets, stewardship models and our shared value.

To ensure future water security, both reliability and resilience must be addressed. When building water infrastructure to meet rising demand, it is crucial to consider system shocks and ensure our facilities can withstand the impacts of climate change, extending beyond droughts. By working in tune with nature, a powerful alliance can be forged to combat climate change.

Tokyo: Driving A Paradigm Shift In Green Architecture

In collaboration with Shinkenchiku, a leading Japanese architecture journal, Arup’s experts from Tokyo office delved into the pivotal roles of architecture and architects in the green transition. The dialogue emphasised the need to refresh our thinking process regarding why and how we build, and to embrace diverse approaches to drive sustainability change. The dialogue shed light on the growing prominence of timber as a mainstream building material in Japan, highlighting the importance to trace its origin and incorporating design strategies that effectively reduce embodied carbon emissions.

This collaboration also showcases the active involvement of young practitioners who are passionate about the environment and dedicated to exploring innovative and regenerative architectural designs.

Shanghai: New Strategic Partnership For A Low-carbon And Circular Future

The Shanghai event focused on the application of circular economy principles within the built industry, discussing the future of circular buildings, technical requirements for low-carbon development, and sustainable asset management and operation strategies. The circular design framework developed by Arup and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation urged the prioritisation of retrofitting and reuse, increasing the long-term value of buildings, improving efficiency, and selecting sustainable materials.

At the event, Arup and China Building Material Test & Certification Group Co., Ltd. signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation on embodied carbon and circular buildings research. The strategic partnership aims to establish industry standards for low-carbon practices, energy conservation and emission reduction, and promote green certifications.

[Green Building Award 2023 – Sponsor's Message] Paving the Way for a Greener Tomorrow with Imagination

Guided by Henderson Land's 2030 Sustainability Vision "G.I.V.E." (Green for Planet, Innovation for Future, Value for People, and Endeavour for Community), The Henderson — Henderson Land's flagship commercial development in the heart of Central — sets out to foster inclusive communities that are environmentally conscious and provide them with a high quality of life. The Henderson is not just a building; it is a new standard and an "icon amongst icons".

The Henderson's green building achievements are manifold: from significant strides in carbon reduction and water efficiency to setting new benchmarks in air quality, material sourcing, climate resilience and sustainable site development. Its continued effort in achieving sustainability goals with innovation-infused property management sets this architectural marvel apart, with its commitment to long-term and short-term sustainability goals evident in every aspect of its design and operation.

At the core of The Henderson lies the pioneering tri-party LIT (Landlord-Individual-Tenant) ESG Partnership Programme ("the programme"), supported by ITEAP (Integrated Tenant Experience Analytic Platform) with "digital twin" technologies. This tri-party collaboration embodies a bottom-up people centric approach, driving ESG from the very inception of property developments.

Stakeholder engagement is also pivotal. The Henderson has taken proactive measures to align tenants with its vision, providing a green fitting-out guide, encouraging tenants to install sub-meter in their premises to monitor energy and water usage, encouraging tenants to achieve their own Green Building and Healthy Building accreditations, including recycling, measuring and reporting of waste management in tenants' office premises, amongst other cooperative policies. This collaborative approach ensures that sustainability is not merely a buzzword, but an achievable reality for all involved parties.

In its journey towards architectural and environmental excellence, Henderson Land strongly believes that collaboration and shared aspirations can be the key to shaping a smarter and more sustainable future. In the grand tapestry of urban development, The Henderson, as the latest iconic landmark of Hong Kong, is not merely a thread but a golden weave — one that sets the tone for a future in which sustainability and design will come together, not out of necessity, but out of responsibility and vision.

BEAM Plus Extending Beyond Hong Kong

With green buildings growing in popularity around the world, BEAM Plus has long been applied beyond Hong Kong. The office renovation project of REC Mechanical & Electrical Engineering (Shanghai) Company Limited was the first project in Mainland China to achieve a Platinum rating under BEAM Plus Interiors. The office was successfully transformed into a green workspace by adopting an integrated approach, including the utilisation of green construction materials and advanced control technology to enhance energy efficiency.

There have also been recent projects in Beijing, Macau, Huizhou, and other regions that have expressed interest in participating in the BEAM Plus assessment. In fact, Hong Kong developers with projects or existing buildings in Mainland China or other countries are especially well suited to applying BEAM Plus to their properties outside Hong Kong.

The Council strongly encourages developers and building owners to submit their non-Hong Kong projects for BEAM Plus assessment.  A fee concession may be granted to non-Hong Kong projects that are the first ones in that geographical region to apply for a BEAM Plus rating. Interested parties are welcome to consult the Secretariat at (+852) 3994 8868 or beamplus@hkgbc.org.hk.
