Written by experts and leaders from AECOM’s five regions and influential partners, including DesignSingapore Council and World Council on City Data, the “Digital Cities: Connected Technology, Connecting Ecosystems” report deep-dives into how we can develop strategies to create cities of the future. With a digital ecosystem that integrates climate twin, biodiversity twin and planning twin, we can harness data on our cities’ carbon footprint and assess climate risk, to achieve ESG goals related to climate impact, ecosystem diversity and decarbonisation, and assist public sector leaders to make informed decisions.
This is the third installment of AECOM’s four-part series on unlocking the potential of digital technology — the first of which highlighted the role that strategy plays in planning and managing digital cities, and the second , the importance of a people-centric approach to ensure the city benefits all.
“Digital Cities: Connected Technology, Connecting Ecosystems” expands on these and presents how an integrated approach is crucial in the development of a digital city. Various technologies, data, platforms and providers all play roles in creating a digital ecosystem that becomes a vital part of a city’s infrastructure.
Going beyond the built environment, digital technology also holds great potential in transforming our natural world. The article “Saving natural assets through digital twins” discusses how digital twins, or digital representations of our physical environment, can aid and complement nature-based solutions (NbS) in conserving our natural ecosystems. Like in digital cities, 3D modelling, artificial intelligence, and real-time data can also support engineers, environmentalists, and other stakeholders in assessing natural landscapes, studying ecosystems, predicting natural phenomena, and ultimately making strategic decisions and reducing risks in projects.

AEC Group Steps up Efforts in Decarbonisation Journey in the Asia Pacific through Partnership and Industry Sharing with CRREM
Allied Environmental Consultants Limited (“AEC”) has partnered with Carbon Risk Real Estate Monitor Project (CRREM) to accelerate the net zero transition of the real estate sector in the Asia Pacific region. The first introductory webinar themed “Decarbonisation of the Built Environment with CRREM” was co-organised by AEC and CRREM and supported by 10 leading international and Hong Kong industry organisations on 2 March. With a wealth of content from a global line-up of industry experts, the webinar was successfully concluded with almost 250 participants joining online.

Green Building Award 2023 is Now Calling for Nominations!
Taking the theme of “Embracing Wellbeing • Excellence in Sustainable Built Environment", the Green Building Award 2023 (GBA 2023) is now calling for nominations. The Award welcomes all nominations that stretch the boundaries of sustainability and accelerate Hong Kong's development into a city that provides wellbeing for all.
GBA 2023 covers five categories: New Buildings (NB), Existing Buildings (EB), Research & Planning (RP), Building Products & Technologies (BPT), and Green Building Leadership (GBL). Industry practitioners are invited to nominate outstanding projects and organisations across any of these categories.
The biennial Green Building Award has been jointly organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC) and the Professional Green Building Council (PGBC) since 2010, and was inaugurated by the PGBC in 2006. With the building industry’s unfailing support over the years, the Award has become one of the highest accolades that recognise contributions towards a green built environment.

"Smart & Green Shopping" Giveaway Campaign Returns to Promote a Green Shopping Culture
To promote green building and a green shopping environment, the Hong Kong Green Shop Alliance (HKGSA) Award launched its “Smart & Green Shopping” campaign last year. Riding on the positive response, it has now produced an eight-episode “Smart & Green Shopping” programme to introduce the eight winners of the HKGSA Award 2022. From 24 March, the programme will be broadcast every Friday morning for eight weeks on Viu TV's “Invest Smarter”, aiming to encourage the public to develop greener shopping habits.
To further propagate its green message to the public, the Council has also launched a Facebook Campaign with eight exciting giveaways. Participants are encouraged to watch the “Smart & Green Shopping” TV programme and answer the related questions to stand a chance to win cash vouchers and green products sponsored by the Award winners. Organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council and funded by the Construction Industry Council, the Hong Kong Green Shop Alliance is the first platform to foster a green shopping environment and encourage collaboration between shopping mall operators and shop tenants to adopt green practices. The HKGSA Award has been established since 2019 to recognise the environmental achievements of shopping malls and shops.
MiMEP: Paving the Way to Sustainable Construction
Multi-trade Integrated Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MiMEP) is amongst the most promising construction methods to streamline the construction process and enhance productivity. It refers to the integration of multi-trade building services components into a single assembly of prefabricated modules, all of which are manufactured in an off-site facility. These are then transported to the construction site, where they are connected together to allow the completion of final building services installations.
To keep abreast of the latest development of MiMEP, the Council organised a technical visit with 28 BEAM Practitioners to the Southa MiMEP Workshop in Sheung Shui on 11 March 2023. In response to evolving requirements for government contracts, Southa has established a workshop in Hong Kong to tailor modules across all building services trades, including multi-disciplinary modules. During the visit, representatives from Southa introduced its ongoing projects adopting the MiMEP method, the design principles of MiMEP, and the workflow for modular fabrication and installation.
Compared with other innovative construction methods, MiMEP is still in the development stage. It is hoped that the wider adoption of MiMEP will lead to more cross-industry collaborations that enable related standards and guidelines to be set, ultimately unleashing its full potential.
