New Milestones in Hang Lung Properties’ Sustainability Journey

Spring City 66, Kunming is now 100% powered by renewable energy

Spring City 66, Kunming is now 100% powered by renewable energy, making it the first development of Hang Lung and the first commercial complex in Yunnan Province to achieve net zero carbon emissions in terms of annual electricity consumption for both landlords’ and tenants’ operations. The renewable energy procurement will provide approximately 57,800MWh of electricity per year from solar and wind, and thereby reduce the property’s carbon emissions by approximately 46,471 tonnes per year. The transaction will take Hang Lung’s own usage of renewable electricity in its Mainland developments to over 14% and accelerate the Company’s progress in achieving ambitious greenhouse gas reductions. It will also help the tenants to reduce their own carbon emissions. Please click here for more details.

In addition, Hang Lung has recently announced 25 sustainability targets to be achieved by the end of 2025 (“25 x 25 Sustainability Targets” or “25 x 25”). The 25 x 25 Sustainability Targets address the four priorities outlined in Hang Lung’s Sustainability Framework, namely Climate Resilience, Resource Management, Wellbeing and Sustainable Transactions. They define concrete and quantifiable measures Hang Lung will pursue to address significant sustainability challenges, providing the Company with a clear agenda over the next four years and a path toward its 2030 Sustainability Goals and Targets. Please click here to understand more about 25 x 25 Sustainability Targets.

In support of Hang Lung’s long-term sustainability ambition, annual strategic ESG KPIs across the Companies tied to the performance reviews of departments and employees were introduced last year. 2021 key achievements include: (1) Developed GHG emissions reduction scenarios for 2025 and 2030 and a GHG mitigation plan for 2022; (2) Conducted first employee engagement survey; (3) Secured 30% of debts and available facilities from sustainable finance; (4) Developed detailed methodology for tracking sustainability spending; and (5) Identified 16 sustainability improvement ideas for adoption in new projects.

Momentum of Driving Carbon Neutrality brings about a Great Leap in the Council’s Membership
Bank of China (Hong Kong) becomes the Council’s First Platinum Patron Member in the Banking Sector

A new year is a new beginning. As the Government of the HKSAR pledges to achieve carbon neutrality before 2050, stakeholders from various sectors have stepped up their commitments in carbon reduction and strengthened their related policies and strategies. As a strong sustainability advocate in the built industry, the Hong Kong Green Building Council has welcomed a number of new Members joining the green building league in recent years, among which the number of Platinum Patron Members, the highest level of HKGBC Membership, has reached a record high. The Council is delighted to see stakeholders from all walks of life actively work towards a green future, and warmly welcomes Bank of China (Hong Kong) (BOCHK) to become the first Platinum Patron Member of the Council in the banking sector.

Mr CHEUNG Hau-wai, Chairman of HKGBC, expressed gratitude towards BOCHK to become our first Platinum Patron Member in the banking sector, leading the banking industry to contribute in the development of green buildings. BOCHK showed its dedication by launching the Green Mortgage Plan last September. BEAM Plus Certification was adopted as one of the application requirements, encouraging property buyers to support sustainable buildings. Through the collaboration with BOCHK, the Council hopes to further promote the development of green finance and lead our city to become an internationally recognised green finance hub.

BOCHK would be eager to drive stakeholders across different sectors to support green buildings and low carbon lifestyle through organising educational events with the Council. Meanwhile, BOCHK announced the expansion of their Green Mortgage Plan to cover all first hand, second hand and government subsidised housing with BEAM Plus Platinum and Gold ratings.

The HKGBC accomplishes its goals through its strong relationship and engagement with stakeholders from the industry, the Government and the community. By working closely with our Members, we jointly maximise positive outcomes from our initiatives to advance the cause of sustainability. We sincerely invite those who share an aspiration for a sustainable built environment, a desire for significant enhancement of business competitiveness, and who want to contribute to a carbon neutral Hong Kong to join the membership programme of the HKGBC. To know more about HKGBC Membership, please click here.

Fee Discount for BEAM Plus Existing Buildings — Volume Certification Programme

The rating tool “BEAM Plus Existing Buildings” (EB), which measures the actual performance of a building and evaluates its facility management practices, has introduced its Volume Certification programme since 2019. The programme enables property owners and facility managers to certify multiple properties at a faster pace and more cost-effective manner by streamlining the assessment process.

Through the use of a portfolio assessment mechanism, applicants can ensure that sustainable operating practices are effectively applied across multiple properties. While the standards and assessment mechanism of BEAM Plus EB aligns with the disclosure mechanism of many ESG reporting initiatives in the market, the applicants can demonstrate the sustainable performance of the building to stakeholders more efficiently.

Since the launch of BEAM Plus EB Volume Certification, 19 property portfolios applied, in which 11 companies which manage 214 properties have participated in this scheme, covering a total gross floor area of around 9,850,000 square metres. Nearly half (48%) are shopping malls, whereas office buildings, private residential estates and industrial buildings contribute 22%, 18% and 6% respectively. 214 and 12 properties have sought assessments under Management (MAN) and Energy Use (EU) aspects respectively. About 70% of the portfolios have been certified, with over 35% achieving the “Excellent” grade. Thanks to the concerted efforts given by the industry, green building certification has become increasingly popular.

Under the Volume Certification programme, discounts for BEAM Plus EB registration fees for bulk registration of properties are now offered till 29 October 2022. Please act now! To enjoy the discounted registration fees, an applicant has to enrol at least four real estate properties.  For details about the fee discount, please visit https://www.hkgbc.org.hk/eng/beam-plus/beam-plus-existing-buildings/volume-cert-prog/index.jsp

Volume Certification registered properties are located throughout Hong Kong
