Fighting Climate Change, We're All In
Swire Properties has launched the second edition of the Sustainability We All Count campaign – “Fighting Climate Change, We’re All In”. This year, the programme highlights the urgency of limiting global warming to 1.5°C and calls for all stakeholders to join the collective fight against the climate crisis. As the first developer in Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland to commit to “Business Ambition for 1.5°C ”, the Company is set to double-down on their decarbonisation efforts to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
Swire Properties' Taikoo Hui in Guangzhou became powered by 100% renewable electricity in July 2021.
As one of the major milestones to help achieve its 1.5°C ambition, Swire Properties’ Taikoo Hui, Guangzhou, its flagship mixed-use development in the Chinese Mainland’s Greater Bay Area, has been powered by 100 per cent renewable electricity since 1 July 2021. The renewable electricity is generated via off-site wind power assets and purchased from a third party. This is Swire Properties’ second portfolio in the Chinese Mainland, after Sino-Ocean Taikoo Li Chengdu, to be powered by 100 per cent renewable electricity.
This milestone allows Swire Properties to reduce Taikoo Hui, Guangzhou’s annual CO2 emissions by over 12,000 tonnes and increase its mix of renewable electricity in the Chinese Mainland to over 37 per cent. Moreover, Swire Properties is one of the first real estate developers in Guangdong Province to accomplish “net zero carbon” in its annual electricity consumption for both landlord and tenants’ operations.

Swire Properties launches Smart Waste Reduction Challenge.Another innovative initiative that Swire Properties launched earlier this month is a Smart Waste Reduction Pilot Programme. Deploying smart scales inside tenants’ premises, this programme monitors tenant level waste disposal data in real time, derives insights to inform employee engagement strategies, and gamifies tenants’ waste reduction journey.
Involving 15 teams, this programme is a six-month long competition that is a first in Hong Kong to marry technology with an action-oriented engagement programme. Tenants received advice to optimise their waste bin layout, and thereafter, Wi-Fi-connected scales were fitted under their centralised sorting stations. Combined with digital dashboards, participants can monitor their waste reduction progress in real-time, benchmark against other teams, and win prizes to recognise their outstanding waste reduction progress. The programme aims to support the transition to a circular economy as well as the Company’s wider decarbonisation efforts.

Keen Industry Support on BEAM Plus
Until 30 June 2021, the number of BEAM Plus registered projects reached 1,814, of which 813 have been certified with Bronze rating or above. BEAM Plus Existing Buildings Volume Certification was launched in October 2019. With the provision of registration fee discount and introduction of new assessment mechanisms, a number of property management companies has participated in the programme. Since its launch, about 200 properties have been registered under Management Aspect of BEAM Plus Existing Buildings V2.0 Selective Scheme.
In just six months, a number of buildings of different types have achieved Platinum rating or Excellent grade under BEAM Plus. Several highlighted projects are displayed below. You may also visit BEAM Plus Online Exhibition to explore more certified green buildings.

Improving Experience for BEAM Plus Project Teams and Our Practitioners
Introductory Website of BEAM Plus Project Online Account
The Council strives to enhance the certification process and improve the experience for project teams and green building practitioners. For example, most of the application forms are now available online to reduce paper usage and simplify the process. With the launch of iBEAM – the assessment automation system, the BEAM Plus Project Online Account has also been integrated with iBEAM. Project information update of selected projects has also been synchronised now.

Revamped HKGBC Online Training Portal
The Council’s CPD Online Training Portal (OTP) has recently been revamped, and is now open to BEAM Pro, BEAM Affiliate and the public to enrol for various green building courses online. New features have been added to enhance user experience, such as quick login and course ratings.

Hong Kong Green Shop Alliance Award 2021 – Call for Submissions
Established in 2019, the Hong Kong Green Shop Alliance Award (HKGSA Award) promotes the collaborative effort between shopping malls and shops on fostering green shopping environments. The HKGSA Award 2021 is now open for submission to recognise the environmental achievements of shopping malls and shops.
Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, the retail industry has been facing tremendous challenges since early 2020. Despite the prevailing pandemic, the concept of “Green Recovery” is being actively promoted by global leaders and scholars. In light of that, “Green Recovery” is added as the Special Citation in this 2021 edition of the HKGSA Award to recognise practitioners’ efforts and achievements in revitalising the economy while maintaining the sustainable shopping environments and ensuring health and wellbeing of the public.
The HKGSA Award 2021 welcomes any cases related to the environmental measures or practices implemented in malls or shops within the period from 1 July 2019 to 30 June 2021. Participating organisations should select the award category from Best Green Practice in Malls, Best Green Practice in Shops and Best Collaborative Effort of Malls and Shops according to the business nature. The submission deadline is 6:00pm on 30 September 2021 (Thursday). We look forward to your participation in jointly fostering the green movement of the retail industry.

Hong Kong Smart Green Building Design Best Practice Guidebook - Launch Event
A photo of all the guest speakers.To facilitate the development of green building design, Hong Kong Green Building Council has published the “Hong Kong Smart Green Building Design Best Practice Guidebook” (the Guidebook), with funding support from Construction Industry Council. The Guidebook establishes 32 recommended smart green strategies which are categorised into 6 key themes including “building design & operations”, “health & wellbeing”, “energy performance”, “material & waste management”, “water performance”, and “mobility & transportation” for different types of new and existing buildings. Apart from showcasing best practices on green building design, the Guidebook alsoconsolidates research findings into practical approaches.
The launch event was held on 29 Jun 2021. Guest speakers from Swire Properties Limited, Henderson Land Development Company Limited, New World Development Company Limited and Hongkong Land (Property Management) Limited were invited to share their smart and green building features and strategies in local case studies, including “urban transformation”, “community design addressing both interaction with environment and residence wellbeing”, “integration of green, wellness, smart and caring” and “smart and green renovation” respectively.

The new Dashboard’s interface is user friendly.
To stimulate actions towards better property management, retrofitting, retro-commissioning and certification to achieve higher overall levels of energy efficiency in the existing buildings, HKGBC developed the Energy Performance Database and Diagnostic Analytics Dashboard (the Dashboard) to provide an easy-to-use tool for industry practitioners for getting started in building energy benchmarking. Users can input the building information and performance data through the interface of the Dashboard to receive analysis results and enhancement recommendations.
The 2nd stakeholder engagement workshop for the Dashboard was held on 30 Jun 2021 to introduce this newly developed tool (Beta version). Representatives from hotels, universities, and utility companies joined the event and showed positive feedback to the Dashboard for its functions and usages.
The Dashboard is now available to interested parties to set up their own accounts at no charge to try out the tool and additional functions of storing multiple buildings’ data.
