CPD Webinar - Elastocaloric Cooling Technology for Green Buildings - Materials, Structures and Devices

This webinar is organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council.
With cooling systems consuming 20% of global electricity, is there any new technology for replacing conventional air-conditioners that rely on climate-damaging refrigerants? The HKUST researchers have developed a new cooling system that can significantly change the air-conditioning technology. This innovation which uses shape memory alloys (SMAs) instead of traditional refrigerants, has achieved a step forward in enhancing cooling power while producing zero direct emissions. The system works by harnessing the temperature-changing properties of nickel-titanium alloys when compressed, a process known as “elastocaloric effect”. The device can cool a room to 21-22°C within 15 minutes, even when outdoor temperatures reach 30-31°C.
The invention was recognised as one of the top ten Emerging Technologies by World Economic Forum in 2024. The team also participated in the Green PropTech Innovation Challenge, Hong Kong’s largest PropTech competition for early-stage startups, and the technology was shortlisted as one of the ten finalists. The HKUST team is focusing on increasing the cooling power and enhancing the COP by using new memory alloys, as well as improving the heat transfer by novel structural optimisation. Eventually, the team aims to realise the technology transfer from academia to industry.
