Mandatory CPD Event - Technical Seminar on Latest Development of Air Purification Technologies
Air pollution has been one of the most significant environmental issues in Hong Kong. According to the Hedley Index, poor air quality caused nearly 100,000 hospital bed-days and 1,500 premature deaths locally in 2016. To tackle the alarming problem, it is necessary to continue in researching effective air-purification technologies. BEAM Plus also places emphasis on air cleaning and purification (e.g. such requirements are included in IEQ4 and related to IEQ P1 of BEAM Plus NB).
The event registration is closed. Thank you for your support.
This event is co-organised by
Business Environment Council Limited (BEC) and Hong Kong Green Building Council Limited (HKGBC).

The seminar aims to share the latest development and application of air purification technologies. One of the tutors of this Seminar, Dr Tin Lau, is now working for Nano and Advanced Materials Institute Limited, a Research and Development Centre which has been dedicated to developing indoor and ambient air purification technologies such as PhotoCatalytic Oxidation (PCO), plasma Driven Catalysis (PDC), microalgae photobioreactor and nanofiber. A demonstration unit of the Centre’s technologies, the microalgae photobioreactor treatment unit for carbon dioxide consumption, oxygen generation and biomass production, is displaying at the Information Centre of Hong Kong – Macau – Zhuhai Bridge in Tung Chung.
Topics to be covered:
1. Air quality problem in Hong Kong
2. Highlights of advanced air purification technologies for air pollutants (such as NOx, VOC, CO2, PM, etc.)
- Photocatalytic oxidation (PCO)
- Plasma-Driven Catalysis (PDC)
- Microalgae
- Nanofiber
3. How to integrate them for commercialization
4. Case sharing
Speakers:
(1) Dr Tin Y T LAU Ph.D.
Technical Manager, Nano and Advanced Materials Institute Limited
After obtaining his Ph.D. in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Dr. Tin LAU joined Nano and Advanced Materials Institute Limited (NAMI) to pursue his interest in applied research. He has over 9 years of R&D experience, including development of air and water purification technology, waste recycling technology, nanomization, bioengineering, process development, product design, and quality assurance of production process, etc.
(2) Dr Veronica CHAN PhD, MPhil, BSc (Hons), BEAM Pro, MASHRAE
Specialist – Green Building & IAQ, Business Environment Council
Dr Chan has over 14 years of experience in environmental-related research, consultancy, and training at different levels ranging from higher diploma to postgraduate levels. Her expertise and research interests include monitoring and disinfection of the bioaerosols, health risk assessment, investigation and modelling of the indoor air quality (IAQ) pollutants. She has published papers on peer-reviewed international journals and at conferences, contributed as an international journal reviewer, and participated in more than 100 IAQ-related projects.
