Skills Upgrading Series for Green Building Practitioners - (6) Building Carbon Footprint Assessment (4 and 11 Feb 2023)
Co-organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council and BEAM Society Limited.
Organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC), the series of Skills Upgrading courses are designed to give participants continuing education that is more in-depth than traditional CPD webinars. The first round of this Skills Upgrading programme started in March 2021 and was concluded in February 2022. From August 2022 to December 2023, another round of Skills Upgrading courses will be organised again by the HKGBC to enable practitioners to construct individual programmes of weekend studies that meet their development needs.
Course No. 6: Building Carbon Footprint Assessment
This “Building Carbon Footprint Assessment” course, which consists of two half-day lectures totalling 6 hours and is co-organised with BEAM Society Limited, will cover the following topics:
- General background about the carbon footprint of buildings
- Methodology for carbon footprint assessment, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
- Sources of carbon in the building life cycle, embodied and operational carbon
- Carbon foot-printing schemes, carbon emission assessment standards such as PAS 2050, PAS 2080, The Greenhouse Gas Protocol, BS EN 15804 and ISO 14067
- Joint EMSD/EPD Carbon Audit Guidelines, meanings of Scopes 1, 2 and 3 emissions, as well as direct and indirect emissions
- Basic equation for estimating emissions, concepts of Emission Factors (EF), location-based method and market-based method, Global Warming Potential (GWP) of materials
- Carbon Audit Reporting, Environmental Product Declarations (EPD)
- Distribution of carbon emissions throughout the various stages in the building lifecycle
- Case studies of carbon footprint studies, carbon intensity (kg CO2/m2/year) of residential vs non-residential buildings
- Roles of advanced technologies such as BIM and Blockchain, integration with LCA models
- How to reduce carbon in buildings, principles of best practices
- BEAM Plus credits related to the above
Target Audience:
Persons who have not received formal and structured training on building carbon footprint assessment. Participants who have attended the same course on 17 and 31 July 2021 need NOT enrol as the course contents are similar.
