Skills Upgrading Series for Green Building Practitioners - (5) Lighting Engineering (17 and 31 Dec 2022)

Co-organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council and BEAM Society Limited

Organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC), the series of Skills Upgrading courses are designed to give participants continuing education that is more in-depth than traditional CPD webinars. The first round of this Skills Upgrading programme started in March 2021 and was concluded in February 2022. From August 2022 to December 2023, another round of Skills Upgrading courses will be organised again by the HKGBC to enable practitioners to construct individual programmes of weekend studies that meet their development needs.

Course No. 5: Lighting Engineering

This “Lighting Engineering” course, which consists of two half-day lectures totalling 6 hours and is co-organised with BEAM Society Limited, will cover the following topics:

  • Nature of light, human perception and eye vision
  • How to quantify light, including the use of parameters - lumen, lux, candela and degrees in colour temperature
  • History of development of lighting, common types of lighting in use today
  • Energy consumption aspects of lighting, energy labels in HK and EU, how to calculate energy and related cost savings
  • Technical concepts including illuminance, luminous efficacy, luminous flux, solid angle, luminous intensity, polar graph, brightness, luminance reflectance, contrast, colour temperature
  • How to measure illuminance, effect of orientation, lux meter on cell phones
  • How to design lighting, average illuminance method, maintenance factor, utilisation factor, space-height ratio (SHR), light uniformity, unified glare rating
  • Technical details and working principles of common types of lamps
  • Automatic control methods, motion sensors, daylight sensors
  • Daylighting using light pipes, working principles and example applications
  • Introduction to lighting and daylighting simulation, software, simulation inputs and outputs
  • Credits in BEAM Plus New Buildings that are related to lighting
