Environment and Conservation Fund Green Building Education and Capacity Building Programmes - Micro-credential Topical Course
Funded by the Environment and Conservation Fund and organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC), this micro-credential topical course series is designed to provide participants with more in-depth continuing education than traditional CPD webinars. It enables practitioners to construct weekend or after-hours study programmes that meet their development needs. Courses will be rolled out at a frequency of about 1-2 courses per month, throughout a period of two years from 1 September 2025 to 31 August 2027. Participants taking 20 or more courses can apply for a skill enhancement certificate from HKGBC, certifying their significant efforts in studying green building.
Micro-Credential Topical Course – Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) and Green Building Maintenance and Management – Part 1
The quality of a city largely depends on how well it is planned, designed, constructed, managed, and maintained. However, maintenance is sometimes not well understood by practitioners and the general public. For example, ageing urban fabric, deferred maintenance cycles, and a lack of preventive strategies frequently lead to accelerated building deterioration, heightened safety risks, and unnecessary and avoidable incidents.
Integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) frameworks directly addresses these challenges. Originating from corporate social responsibility (CSR) – a self-regulating business model that drives accountability to an organisation, its stakeholders, and the public – ESG translates high-level sustainability goals into measurable, day-to-day real estate operations. This course, which consists of two parts, "Quality of a City and ESG" and "Green Building Maintenance and Management", will provide comprehensive insights and practical tips to bridge the gap between traditional property maintenance and modern sustainability requirements, strengthening the climate resilience and long-term viability of Hong Kong's built environment.
The speaker will explore the relationship between urban quality of life and ESG principles by examining critical sustainability issues, building maintenance practices, and the related regulatory regime.
Part 1 - Quality of a City and ESG will cover the following topics:
- Sustainability in the Real Estate Market
- Sick Building Syndrome
- Green Buildings and Grey Buildings
- Origin of ESG
- Common Building Defects and Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ)
- Risk Management Experience Sharing
- Mandatory Building Inspection (MBI) and Its Effectiveness
- Evergreen Buildings – Is It a Dream?
After the course, participants will understand how ESG principles can be integrated into real estate asset management, identify common building inspection and indoor environmental quality risks, and critically evaluate the sustainability of real estate properties.
