Environment and Conservation Fund Green Building Education and Capacity Building Programmes - Micro-credential Topical Course
Funded by the Environment and Conservation Fund and organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC), this micro-credential topical course series is designed to provide participants with more in-depth continuing education than traditional CPD webinars. It enables practitioners to construct weekend or after-hours study programmes that meet their development needs. Courses will be rolled out at a frequency of about 1-2 courses per month, throughout a period of two years from 1 September 2025 to 31 August 2027. Participants taking 20 or more courses can apply for a skill enhancement certificate from HKGBC, certifying their significant efforts in studying green building.
Micro-credential Topical Course - Building Drainage Resiliency: Navigating Post-pandemic Health and Climate Extremes
Modern building drainage systems face an unprecedented double threat: evolving public health requirements and severe climate volatility. The lessons of the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted how critical proper drainage design is to preventing pathogen transmission and sewer odour ingress. Concurrently, the catastrophic extreme weather and record-shattering rainfall events in recent years have made traditional drainage sizing challenging, with the prevention of drain overflows being one of the top priorities.
This intensive 2-hour technical talk equips design and maintenance professionals with actionable strategies to tackle these modern challenges. Participants will learn how to design and maintain healthy and resilient drainage systems that safeguard public health and withstand extreme weather.
This course will cover the following topics:
- Health & Hygiene: Three kinds of proprietary trap-and-diversion piping designs to help maintain water seals at floor drains; the dilemma of providing floor drains in pit structures.
- Maintenance Practices: Diagnostic techniques for odour issues, service life and typical kinds of component failures in external piping systems.
- Climate Adaptation: Updated hydraulic calculation and roof drainage design criteria utilising recent precipitation data.
- Future-proofing Design: Sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDS) and sponge city concepts – pros and cons and lessons from recent applications.
