AECOM Launches “Delivering Sustainable Legacies: Our 2024 Sustainability Report”

Since the launch of the Think and Act Globally strategy, AECOM has formalised its commitment to delivering Sustainable Legacies, which has seen it take bold steps to embed sustainability and resilience across its business.

Fostering Sustainability in AECOM Culture
Employees are the greatest asset, and AECOM has taken action to create the best workplace in the industry. This includes implementing requisite sustainability training programmes to enable employees to work safely, sustainably and ethically. As part of this process, the teams are trained on the global sustainability risk framework, which aligns with the Sustainable Legacies strategy. This framework is critical for continually assessing project and environmental risks across every decision they make. AECOM has achieved outstanding employee engagement and training completion rates for the fourth consecutive year.

Addressing Climate Change
Through the global climate change risk assessment conducted over the last year, AECOM recognised numerous risks and opportunities related to climate change and the transition to net-zero carbon emissions. To identify these risks and opportunities over time and to manage the uncertainty surrounding future climate change, AECOM has conducted scenario analysis using the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) Shared Socio-economic Pathways (SSPs) published in the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6).

Growing the ESG Advisory business
The increasing depth and scope of AECOM’s capabilities are driving substantial growth in its ESG Advisory business, which assists clients in achieving their own ambitious net-zero and sustainability agendas. AECOM’s perspectives and approaches, built upon its extensive first-hand experience, differentiate AECOM from others in the field, and its clients are actively engaging and responding to these initiatives.

Driving the ScopeXTM initiative
Most recently, AECOM implemented the ScopeX™ approach, which aims to ensure early engagement and alignment with project scope to maximise carbon reduction impact. ScopeX™ is a way of systemising the methods, workflows and technologies needed to decarbonise the projects they deliver. The recent ScopeX™ decarbonisation policy formalises how the company can integrate decarbonisation principles into everything they do.

Revolutionising the Development of Sustainable Infrastructure
AECOM’s focus on sustainability drives it forward with the latest technology, particularly in its role leading the Sustainable Markets Initiative task force on measurement and transparency. This work has led the Company to build the innovative and collaborative SMI Nature Risk Tool, which was developed in partnership with stakeholders and industry experts to create a forward-looking, decision-ready solution to guide early-stage infrastructure decisions. As AECOM embarks on pilot projects, its aim is to significantly expand access to this transformative tool, thereby advancing sustainable and resilient infrastructure worldwide.
