AECOM Launches “Digital Cities: Empowering Innovation Through Effective Governance” Report

As AECOM embarks on an era where digital technology and artificial intelligence plays an increasingly integral part in our lives, the “Digital Cities: Empowering Innovation Through Effective Governance” report explores the role that digital technology plays in enabling better outcomes at all levels of smart city governance. With insights from experts and leaders from AECOM’s global offices and influential partners, including International Federation of Surveyors, PwC and Amazon Web Services, the report shares how digital data is used to allow faster and more effective decision-making, addressing both value creation and risk management, while also nurturing a culture of transparency and trust.

This marks the final installment of AECOM’s four-part series on how digital technology can be leveraged in strategies and approaches for developing digital cities. These digital cities play a crucial role in addressing the rising number of unprecedented challenges facing humanity, including accelerating urbanisation, climate change, and viral pandemics — the first of which highlighted the role that strategy plays in planning and managing digital cities; the second emphasised the importance of a people-centric approach to ensure the city benefits all; and the third examined how connected digital ecosystems unlock potential in the built environment.

The “Digital Cities: Empowering Innovation Through Effective Governance” report also explains in a smart city context, governance needs to look beyond traditional aspects such as control and compliance. Governance must also enable innovations and collaboration between all city stakeholders to create a more positive impact on society.

In the chapter “Data-governed solutions for unprecedented sustainability challenges”, AECOM looks at how cities can adopt a data-centric approach, such as ScopeXTM, to improve decision making and quality of life within the context of climate change mitigation. Case studies from the Swedish capital of Stockholm and the Indonesian town of Slawi show how digital tools can be used to empower both city officials and citizens alike.

Real-world examples in Dubai, Singapore, Baltimore and other cities are also used to demonstrate the potential of effective digital governance in smart cities. A successful implementation requires not only an understanding of the role that technology plays in the city of the future, but also developing strategies, frameworks and policies to manage its impact for the good of all citizens to ensure long-term, sustainable development.
