Carrier’s Steps to Zero-Carbon-Ready by Building Energy Audit and Chiller Plant Improvement Seminar by HKIE

Carrier in collaboration with Environmental Market Solutions Inc. (EMSI) presented the seminar – Steps to Zero-Carbon-Ready Building by Energy Audit and Chiller Plant Improvement organised by Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) for its members.

The seminar addressed the pressing need in tackling 2030+ net zero target imperatives. As the prominent source of electricity consumption, the building sector plays a crucial role in responding to Hong Kong's Climate Action Plan 2050. Mr July CHEN, Regional General Manager of EMSI, embarked the talk by providing a glance of Net Zero in the building sector and demonstrating how the targets are aligned with the global and local perspectives. He presented how practitioners could attain the progression through a periodic carbon reduction roadmap, as referenced in the HKGBC Zero-Carbon-Ready Building Scheme. July also outlined through a case study showing the key building retrofitting solutions including chiller system upgrades, domestic hot water heat pumps, PV solar panels and staff behavioural management strategies for the ambitious plan.

In the second session, Mr Chris HONG, Executive Energy Audit Engineer of Carrier Hong Kong Limited, highlighted the importance of achieving high efficiency chiller plant in carbon reduction at the building level. To shed light on how to achieve the ambitious carbon-reduction plan outlined in the first session, Chris gave an important keynote on equipment upgrade strategies in reducing power consumption and in achieving the Zero-Carbon-Ready goal. In his closing speech, Chris referred to actual site examples to point out that, despite the availability of recent Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) and digital water-cooled technologies, there are unique physical constraints in Hong Kong's built environment which may limit the water-cooled application posing a greater challenge in reaching the carbon reduction target.

The built environment shall signify their commitment to achieving net zero by 2050 through a well-decided decarbonisation roadmap. Carrier remains dedicated to introducing digital-enabled initiatives that promote sustainability advancement and accelerate the net zero movement.
