Festival Walk – Paving the way for greener habits and achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050

Festival Walk proactively manages and reduces the environmental impact of its operations

Festival Walk is a landmark territorial mall with an office component in Kowloon Tong and a major asset in Mapletree Pan Asia Commercial Trust’s S$16.7 billion portfolio. As a group, Mapletree is committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, and has taken proactive steps towards this goal.

Since the start of the group‘s sustainability journey in 2000, Festival Walk has achieved approximately 50% reduction in energy consumption till date. The building was one of the first to achieve the Platinum rating under the HK-BEAM1 in 2006 and has since received the Final Platinum rating under BEAM Plus Existing Buildings in 2017 and 2022.

Reducing Carbon Footprint

Due to its large size, running a mall can be carbon-intensive. Hence, the group aims to ensure that the community can enjoy the space with minimal negative environmental impact.

As an important step, Festival Walk has switched to energy-efficient LED lighting options, slashing energy consumption by at least 75%.

Through a cleverly designed 4,000m2 skylight and an innovative low-emissivity curtain wall, Festival Walk is able to harness natural light and insulate the building for greater energy efficiency.

Festival walk provides electric vehicle charging stations to encourage tenants and shoppers to use green transport.

Another key initiative is the installation of over 700 solar panels on the rooftop. With a rated power of 286 kWp, they can generate 330,000 kWh of clean energy annually.

Cutting Water Usage

To reduce water usage, water-efficient fittings are used in toilets.

Festival Walk was also a pioneer in the Pilot Scheme for Wider Use of Fresh Water in Evaporative Cooling Towers for Energy-Efficient Air Conditioning Systems in the early 2000s, where bleed-off water from air-conditioning cooling towers is used as flushing water.

Engaging the Community through Ground-Up Initiatives

Malls are uniquely positioned to influence the behaviour of the community. Hence, the group has proactively implemented waste minimisation and recycling programmes.  During December 2016 to June 2017, Festival Walk, Environmental Protection Department (EPD) and Green Council co-organised the “Food Waste Recycling Partnership Scheme”. Festival Walk continues participating in EPD’s food waste recycling program in Organic Resources Recovery Centre (ORRC-1).

Festival Walk is an active participant in several government energy-saving initiatives such as Energy Saving Charter and Charter on External Lighting. Festival Walk is part of the 4T Charter2 scheme which encourages companies to set energy saving targets and timelines, share data with stakeholders, and also welcomes tenants to participate.

Committed to doing good, Festival Walk encourages volunteering among employees and collaborates with local programmes, such as Food Angel, to collect surplus edibles and convert them into meals. In 2021, staff volunteers cleaned and prepared 120kg of vegetables to make 7,628 meal boxes for the underprivileged. Festival Walk also allows shoppers to convert their mall bonus points into meal boxes for Food Angel, simultaneously expanding the impact and including shoppers in meaningful initiatives.
