Dr Vincent CHENG, Director of Building Sustainability (middle, front row) signed the contract with Electrical and Mechanical Services Department.

Arup records its fifth district cooling system (DCS) project win in Hong Kong – the latest win is the design and construction of the DCS for Kwu Tung North New Development Area in the northeast New Territories.

A key development for potential for strategic growth in the North East New Territories, Kwu Tung North New Development Area is about 447 ha providing a mix of functions including residential, commercial, retail, school, leisure, social and community facilities, which will create a substantial power demand when fully developed in the year of 2034.

Commissioned by the Hong Kong Government’s Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD), Arup will implement detailed design, construction and installation of the DCS project to produce chilled water at its plant building and distribute the chilled water to user buildings in the area through an underground water piping network. The estimated cooling capacity of 190 megawatts of refrigeration (MWr) will serve a total planned air-conditioned floor area of about 1.12 million m².

The win follows on from their other projects, including the North and South Plants of Kai Tak Development DCS and its additional 3rd Plant, West Kowloon Cultural District DCS and Tung Chung New Town Extension DCS, a genuine recognition of Arup's effort in implementing sustainable infrastructure concept in Hong Kong to combat climate change and achieve the city’s carbon emission reduction target on a long-term basis.
