The Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC) is a non-profit, member-led organisation established in 2009 and has become a public body under the Prevention of Bribery Ordinance since 2016. The HKGBC strives to promote the standard and development of sustainable buildings in Hong Kong. The HKGBC also aims to raise green building awareness by engaging the government, the industry and the public, and to develop practical solutions for Hong Kong’s unique, subtropical built environment of high-rise, high density urban area, leading Hong Kong to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and to become a world’s exemplar of green building development.
Our passion for a sustainable built environment is the motivating force to achieve our goals. The wide experience and deep insight of our members and experts is the underlying foundation for real results.
Our Vision
To help save the planet and improve the wellbeing of the people of Hong Kong by transforming the city into a greener built environment.
Our Mission
To lead market transformation by advocating green policies to the Government; introducing green building practices to all stakeholders; setting design, construction and management standards for the building profession; and promoting green living to the people of Hong Kong.
Behind Our Logo
The logo of the HKGBC reflects our position in local green building movement. Inspired by the five-petal white Bauhinia blakeana, the city’s floral emblem, on the flag of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the flower-like design symbolises our role as an overarching body of green building development in Hong Kong.
Our Office
As a role model in green building, the Council’s renovated office achieved Platinum rating under BEAM Plus Interiors in early 2018. With a view to enhancing health and wellbeing of colleagues, the space was re-designed so that most of the colleagues could have views to the outside at their workstations, and more indoor plants were also deployed as part of the partitions. Most of the lighting fixtures could be automatically turned off during non-office hours including lunch breaks, while colleagues can still control the lighting of their own workstations smartly through their mobiles. The well-performing system and energy-efficient lighting have saved nearly 50% of the electricity consumption. Moreover, the host building obtained Platinum rating under BEAM Plus Existing Buildings and met the Excellent Class of Indoor Air Quality Certification Scheme, creating a healthy indoor environment for the Secretariat.
Green Building Council and Worldwide Green Building Movement
A green building council of a country / territory is usually a not-for-profit, independent, member-based, industry driven organisation. By bringing the industry together, a green building council is the overarching body driving the sustainable development in the local built environment.
As a comprehensive strategy of driving market transformation, a green building council will put in place specific education and awareness programmes to build up the skills of the industry and shift the behaviours and mindsets of both the public and the professionals. It will also work in close partnership with the local government to help develop public policies and initiatives that will speed up the transformation towards a sustainable built environment.
A green building council may join the global network organised by the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC). Currently HKGBC is the Established Member of the WorldGBC (highest level of membership) since November 2012. HKGBC has also joined the current WorldGBC Board to set the strategies to promote green building development globally.
