ADVANCING NET ZERO IDEAS COMPETITION 2021 E-BOOK FOREWORD FROM HKGBC September 2022 Ar. Prof. Ada FUNG Yin-suen, BBS Chairperson of Organising Committee In addressing the urgency of the emergency of climate change, we must get our acts together to decarbonise before 2050 in Hong Kong in line with Government’s policy. “The journey of a thousand miles starts with a small step.” With a passion for a sustainable built environment, HKGBC started to organise the Advancing Net Zero (ANZ) Ideas Competition in 2020, at a time when COVID-19 had been hitting our city. As the pioneer of its kind, we need to act with tact and wisdom in organising ANZ Competition. Acting locally and thinking globally, we have successfully mobilised expert resources from all over the world to help us organise this ANZ Ideas Competition on a voluntary basis. Under the key theme of ANZ, the Competition seeks to address three sub-themes, namely Zero Carbon and Ultra-energy Efficient, Embodied Carbon, Healthy and Sustainable. We hope that this would be a showcase at international level in line with World Green Building Council’s vision for ANZ. This ANZ Competition itself is a living process from conceptual stage to completion and beyond, bringing people together, raising awareness, arousing interest, building capability, generating ideas, and gathering momentum for ANZ. We have organised a series of Technical Webinars throughout 2021, finalists’ presentation and award presentation in December 2021, roundtable discussions, followed by Roving Exhibitions from 2021 to 2022. Enthusiastic dialogues are still on-going throughout 2022. This Advancing Net Zero Ideas Competition 2021 E-Book vividly captures the process, the people, and the deliverables. Many proposals offer a holistic approach that is user-centric, integrating passive design, structural efficiency, smart technologies, energy management, health and well-being aspects that foster behavioral change. I must offer my special thanks to Ir Dr Cary CHAN, JP, for his project initiation and management, leading HKGBC Secretariat to bring this project to fruition with exemplary performance. Last but not the least, I must give a special vote of thanks to Mr CHEUNG Hau-wai, SBS, Chairman of HKGBC. This project would not have been so successful without his staunch support and encouragement throughout the entire process. “It takes only a spark, to keep the home-fires burning.” Let us join hands towards Advancing Net Zero and Decarbonisation, and I hope that this E-Book would serve as a useful reference for the industry as we journey into the future. 2
