Swire Properties has taken another huge step forward in its carbon reduction journey since adopting a Climate Change Policy in 2018. In October 2019, the company became the 1st real estate company in Hong Kong and Mainland China to have its long-term carbon reduction targets validated and approved by the Science Based Targets Initiatives (SBTi), a globally recognised framework adopted by over 680 companies in the world.

As part of the efforts of Swire Properties’ Sustainable Development (SD) 2030 Strategy, the Company has established the below SBT to guide its long-term decarbonisation strategy for its global portfolio:

•  To reduce scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 35% per square meter by 2025 and by 52% per square meter by 2030, from a 2018 base year;

•  To reduce scope 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from downstream leased assets by 28% per square meter by 2030, from a 2018 base year; and from capital goods by 25% per square meter by 2030, from a 2016-2018 base year

To meet these ambitious targets, Swire Properties will have to continuously adopt innovative low-carbon, smart and green building technologies and management best practices to further enhance the energy efficiency of their global portfolio. They will also work closely with their tenants and supply chain partners to reduce carbon emissions along the value chain. To date, a series of energy-saving measures and engagement programmes, as listed below, have been introduced.

Energy-saving measures for Scope 1 & 2 emission reduction:

•  Monitoring-based commissioning of heating, ventilating and air conditioning (“HVAC”) systems to optimise building operation
•  Installation of biodiesel tri-generation and absorption chiller to supply combined heating, cooling and power generation and a combined green roof and solar PV system at One Taikoo Place
•  Installation of cloud-based smart energy management platform to track and optimise energy consumption
•  Working in collaboration with Tsinghua University through the company’s Joint Research Centre for Building Energy Efficiency and Sustainability to develop and test new methods for increasing energy efficiency and improving environmental performance

Engagement programmes for Scope 3 (Downstream Leased Assets) emission reduction:

•  Conducting free energy audits for their tenants to help them identify energy-saving opportunities
•  Providing standardised fit-out and renovation guidelines for tenants to help them incorporate energy-saving and sustainability considerations into their office, retail shops and restaurants

Measures for Scope 3 (Capital Goods) emission reduction:

•  Procurement of building materials with lower embodied carbon
•  Building design optimisation
•  Adoption of more energy-efficient construction methods and technologies

Science-Based Target initiative (SBTi) is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute and the World Wide Fund for Nature. It aims to mobilise companies to establish carbon reduction targets that are aligned with current climate science to keep global temperature increases below 2°C compared with pre-industrial levels, as stated by the Paris Agreement. By setting up science-based targets, companies could mitigate risks for future regulatory changes, strengthen investors’ and stakeholders’ confidence, as well as enhance energy and operational efficiencies through innovation.

E&M Carnival 2020 - Public Education on E&M Safety and Green Building with EMSD

In response to the activation of "Emergency Response Level" under the "Preparedness and Response Plan for Novel Infectious Disease of Public Health Significance", the E&M Carnival 2020 originally scheduled for 22 & 23 February 2020 at Cheung Sha Wan Playground will be postponed. Details will be announced later.

Organised by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) and co-organised by Hong Kong Green Building Council and other thirteen organisations, the E&M Carnival 2020 will be held on 22 and 23 February at Cheung Sha Wan Playground. As one of the co-organisers, the Hong Kong Green Building Council will support EMSD to promote E&M safety, energy efficiency and application of innovative technology.

The admission of the two-day Carnival is free with various activities, including game booths, children’s corner and stage performance. The Council will also set up a game booth to promote the relationship between green building and energy saving.

Beyond Sewerage: Green Pumping Stations

At BEAM Plus Certification Ceremony 2019, Mr LIU Chun-san, JP, Under Secretary for Development, HKSAR Government, presented BEAM Plus Platinum certificates and plaques to Drainage Services Department’s project teams of several pumping stations.

Talking about drainage, you may think of drains and wells but rarely associate them with green and environmental protection. In fact, there are a number of drainage facilities in Hong Kong, such as pumping stations that achieved Final Platinum ratings under BEAM Plus New Buildings.

Harbour Area Treatment Scheme Stage 2A - New Main Pumping Station & Workshop Building is one of them. The project adopted energy-efficient air-conditioning and lighting systems, as well as installed photovoltaic (PV) panels for renewable energy generation. At other BEAM Plus Platinum pumping stations - Lam Tsuen Valley Sewage Pumping Stations, including No. 1 (She Shan Tsuen), No. 5 (Ma Po Mei) and No. 6 (Pak Ngau Shek), greenery spans across the rooftops that help mitigate the heat island effect. It also helps to beautify the environment and integrate the building with the neighbourhood.

There are more green pumping stations recently built in the city, such as the Shek Chung Au Sewage Pumping Station, Kowloon City No. 1 and No. 2 Sewage Pumping Stations, etc. Learn more about them at BEAM Plus Online Exhibition

1. Located in Sha Tau Kok, Shek Chung Au Sewage Pumping Station has achieved Final Platinum rating under BEAM Plus New Buildings.

2. After attaining Final Platinum rating in New Buildings assessment, Kowloon City No. 1 and No. 2 Sewage Pumping Stations underwent the Existing Buildings assessment and achieved Provisional Platinum rating.
